Guest paulrstokes Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Hi All Looking for a little advice with regard to various YB illnesses. Firstly I seem to have one suffering one eye cold, one eye is very watery, and there is mucos from the nostril on the same side. What would you give and secondly would you just treat the one bird or all of them? Secondly I have lost a couple to which I suppose is YB sickness, green slime, bringing up food and generally going light. I have used strike for the presacribed period, but now a couple seem to be showing signs again, any suggestions, someone suggested something called ronidazzle aby idea where I can get this from. If it helps there are no vermin etc and the birds do not pick around the garden at all. Thanks

Also with the one eye colds and mucus from nostril you have a respiratory problem, you can treat with a few things such as tylan, or ornithose cure,
kingy1975 Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 firstly i would cull the bird suffering with watery eye. put all the yougsters on a light diet mix/depurative. and if you can get hold of it put nystan on the diet mix till the feed is moistened and let dry and feed. if you can not get hold of nystan then use adenosan sachets again on the diet mix using the same method of moistening the feed and adding the contents of the adenosan .repeat this for least a week and the symptons of watery doppings and holding corn in the crop should vanish. when u are satisfied they are digesting the corn then start to mix some live yoghurt. i use live greek yoghurt from asda onto the diet mix for a few more days to put some goodness back into the birds crop. regarding the watery eye you need to treat with a suitable antibiotic like tylon/linco spectum 100 /auromycin/tetsol / ornicure. all will clear respitory ailments .once cleared go to basics and check ventillation /overcrowding / hygiene. hope this helps.

Thanks i dont want to alarm u but have ur birds seen by a vet.i suffered a similar problem which was suspected psitticosis, which is a very nasty problem and be warned...if it is this, then u can very easily catch it....i was treated by the hospital for this problem. forget treating the birds blindly see a vet and then start wot ever treatment u need. if u are losing birds then summut is seriously wrong! one eye cold is a symptom which is usually associated with a respitory condition, and going light plus the one eye cold is wot my birds suffered with b4 losing them. believe me u can have the cleanest cot in ur town ,.(.birds that recover from psitticosis will not make good racers and will not be much good at breeding.)this i learned when i studied this problem.... hopefully u have not got this problem and it is just a simple respitory condition, hope this is useful to u and enlightens u to wot could be wrong and not wot nescessary, is the problem u have....best of luck ...paul

Guest Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 SPOT ON KINGY ITS NOT Y/B SICKNESS ITS CIRCO VIRUS light diet mix plenty of rest no going in and upseting them and plenty of electrolites in the water all this for a week or so circo virus gives alot of diferent sytoms some will develope canker and some respertory problems but not all the birds will go down with the same illness so dont try and treat for all the sytoms untill you get the virus clear their are nothing to cure the virus just as kingy said light diet and rest and plenty of electrolites ine the water to replace the body salts lost while the droppings are loose alot of fanciers think that this is y/b sickness but its not i made the same mistake for two years untill i went to tom pennycot in ayr he confirmed the above
Guest Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 would like to know what were the symptoms and effects of this disease on you and your pigeons and what was the cure and also how is it transmitted well i had chest pains(tight chest)muscle problems in my lower legs and a few other symptoms like head aches etc,the only known antibiotic, to really work with this in humans and in birds is(from top info sites) tetracycline...oxytetracycline in tablet form. i was on 8 tablets a day(250mg strength) and it was ever so hard to cure.my wife also suffered from it, as she helps out in the cot..THIS IS THE REASON I STARTED BACK UP...again this year as i destroyed all birds to eradicate it from my lofts.9 years of flying down the drain so to speak....////in the birds symptoms was 1 eye cold, scabby eye, weight loss, weak in the legs, and spewing corn...also gaping beak as if gasping for breath.eventually death....paul

The human disease is psittacosis, and comes from bird's infected with Chlamydia, a virus, symptoms exactly as described. Down to poor loft ventilation /overcrowding. Definite visit to vet, don't take any chances on this one.
