Something is eating my birds. It primarily takes the head off and eats on.  He ate a full 3 week old bird who's nest was on the ground. When I left a posioned carcase it would not touch it. I left a rat trap with food in it, but it does not touch it. It seems to only go for the live bird. Most of the birds are sensible enough to get off the ground and seem OK but I can only assume that the ones on the ground are scared or transfixed at night and won't get off the ground. Would a weasel or mink eat everything or at least kill everything on one visit? I still have not ruled out a large rat but he must be very smart. The pooh left behind looks like a large rat dropping. What might it be and how might I get it or defend the loft.

has it pulled the carcase to any one side of your loft , as to see what direction  it is heading with it  to then see where it is getting in  mate.

Keep the birds from the floor and get some peanut butter and mix antifreeze into it and keep it away from birds  :)

First thing I would do is find out where its getting in and put a stop to that first, then put a bird in a larrson trap and catch it.  :)

Hi there.

I had a problem with a rat getting into my house, ended up in the walls, was a right pain to get rid of, had to call council out to deal with it in the end. they used believe it or not a chocolate white mouse in the trap, first night down caught him. after talking with the guy that came out i was told it was there preferred bait to catch them with. I was also told that a mouse can get in a hole the size of a pencil and a rat can get in a hole the size of a 50p.

Rats always go for the corn in the crop first thats why they take the heads off but they will come back for the carcass.

The best trap is a fen trap but make sure you have it covered properly. Baits are peanut butter, mars bar and chocolate. I have bait boxes waiting all the time. I check them roughly every week. Where rats are concerned, if you have had them once, they will always keep coming back. According to a Council Rat Man, they can follow a trail for up to two years. As they breed and the population increases some will be pushed out and have to leave the area. Those that are pushed out, then follow the trail left by previous rats and they will end up at your house. So you will never ever be completely free of rats after that. The best we can do is to manage the problem by being ready for them when they come.

the reason your not catching any in the trap is because they can smell, rats have a great sense of smell and will aviod any new structures in his usual walkways.

as already stated the rats go for the crop because they know corn is stored there.

rats have a superior way of surviving most things.

they have to gnaw at things because their teeth are continually growing.

all the best in finding a solution to them.
