Peckedhen Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I decided to give my birds some hemp in the hope it will 'fire them up a bit'. I'm getting very impatient for eggs! The local pet shop can only offer me hemp that fishermen use and were unsure if it would be OK for pigeons. Any ideas on this please? Peckedhen :-/
bewted Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 go sparingly with hemp, birds can get addicted to it and its a heat food, read it on internet and known fact by pigeon men,,,,ted
snowy Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 pecked hen, as i said when i pmd you, i use just a little while they are breeding, to fire them up a bit, you can either mix in in with their normal breeding mix, or as i do, i feed in the afternoon normal feed, but in the morning i throw a little in on its own, it worked for me as advised by silverwings i think, on topic, stubbern breeding. hope this helps, i think the fishing hemp is bigger than the small bird seed hemp, but not 100%, im sure someone will put you right, regards
schouwman71 Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 yes its the same hemp and its ok to use, just go steady with it and in a couple of days you will see them more active.
Peckedhen Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 OK thanks, I'll give it a try. Whoops....... try- on the birds of course! :B :B ;D
Guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 give it a try then change your name to PECKEDHEMP :D
carl Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 peckedhen give them a teaspoon each for there morning feed, that should do them and your normal mix for there teatime feed, how long you been waiting for eggs now.
Guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Most of the pigeon seed mixes contain hemp, Peckedhen. Little green seed. Its proper name is Cannabis, so you ken fine now what your dealing with. For goodness sake don't drop any in the garden and have it grow there. Don't think neighbours will be too impressed when the 'other' flying squad turns up. ;D ;D
Peckedhen Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 Cannabis huh? Cheap then at 59p for a bagful! LOL Bruno! I've given them some of the sort the fishermen use - brownish seeds. No wonder they loved it. So, I have a loft of very happy pigeons now! Just hope it encourages them to lay.;D ;D
snowy Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 LIKE THE SWINGING SEXTIES MAN PEACE & MAKE LOVE BABY PIGEONS lol!! ;D
Guest Silverwings Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 hemp ? grown it smoked it and toked it ( not these days of course ) soap was its best form ? my pigeons love it ? try hemp seed oil ( holland and Barrat ) so so much in omega 3 see and feel the feather texture ? racing in this damp modern climate a little waterproofing helps them stay in the air when their competitors are drying out some sixty miles down the road yours will still be going ?
jimmy white Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 ideal for what you want it for [ the pigeons i mean] itll help them heat up , but when racing very little, if any, depending on the races. plant some for next years crop itll grow easy ;D ;D ;D ;D find out what the bail money is first :) your fairly getting there pecked hen , good luck to you
Chatrace Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 to much Hemp is bad. if you notice the breast changing to a almost blue color you are feeding way to much
T_T Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 Peckedhen, Maybe with giving them the sort the fishermen use, will help them SWIM the channel. LOL.
carl Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 peckedhen give them a teaspoon each for there morning feed, that should do them and your normal mix for there teatime feed, how long you been waiting for eggs now. have they laid yet peckedhen, how long have they been paired up
Peckedhen Posted January 29, 2006 Author Report Posted January 29, 2006 No, still no eggs - they've been paired for 16 days now - no signs of driving or anything! :-/ :-/ They've had the hemp and a light in the loft for two days.
Peckedhen Posted January 29, 2006 Author Report Posted January 29, 2006 03, 04. and early bred 05 :-/ :-/
snowy Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 because they are quite new birds & a bit of a change around in your loft, maybe they just need a little more time to settle in before breeding, its sometimes just a bit of patience, as i was the same, hope this helps. it will come right soon
Peckedhen Posted January 29, 2006 Author Report Posted January 29, 2006 Yeah, your probably right - I don't do patience very well! :
T_T Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 Peckedhen, I know this may sound a backward step but I would part them out of site for three days, then introduce them again and watch the results.
Peckedhen Posted February 2, 2006 Author Report Posted February 2, 2006 Ok, I've moved the hens out. I'm going to wait now until the weather warms up a bit and then put them back in. Will I have to pair them again or will they remember which is their partner? Should I put them back in one at a time or all at once? Will they lay (hopefully) straight away or will there be a 10 day wait again? Sorry I'm asking so many questions. : Peckedhen.
snowy Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 i would let them just pick there own mates in your case snowy
