Wiley Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 best way to give garlic is by chopping it up into pea size and popping 2-3 straight down the throat of the bird
Guest IB Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 I´m not sure but i think i read somewhere that the good stuff in garlic is destroyed aftar a reletivley short time after crushing it and putting in the water, thats why i always crush it in the water and give it right away. There's a lot of conflicting information on it. Allicin is only one of the active agents, but it is reckoned to be the main one that has all the antimicrobial properties that we want. It starts to breakdown into other compounds almost immediately, and some papers say it is gone completely within 24 hours. So I've always gone for fresh - peel the bulb and crushed straight into the drinker, and provided its still clean I will leave the garlic water in the drinker overnight. That way the birds get some allicin for sure..
Hogni Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Yes thats what i´ve heard IB, and i do it the same way as you.
robinthfc Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 during the racing season what day/s do you chaps give the birds garlic in water?
Guest IB Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 during the racing season what day/s do you chaps give the birds garlic in water? I think the best time to give it is after the race. My reason is that overnight in the basket and coming home from the race is the time the birds are most likely to pick 'something' up, which could be a knock and a bit of inflammation. Mine will come home to cider vinegar and honey in the water; I'll change that at the 2nd water change Saturday afternoon for garlic, and repeat fresh garlic water during Sunday into Monday. If the birds have picked something up, garlic will stop it spreading and developing further in individual birds.
