hi

i have a yearling who had a broken leg which was splinted and she now seems to be walking ok and putting weight on the leg but there is a hard lump about the size of a peanut where the break was.is this anything to worry about ??   she seems ok flying/landing but im wondering why she still has the lump about 8 months after the break-any ideas??

Looks like the bone didn't set correctly in place, and what you can feel is a new growth of bone.

How does she hold her leg when she's flying, if she can't tuck it up under her well enough, she may only be good for short races

you often find this with obs with broken legs, its as hyacinth says, sometimes they will fly ok , youll be able to judge it better next year in a few tosses, to look on the positive side ive won races with birds like this, but as with any injury ,theres allways doubts

Don't know when your bird broke its leg, but one peculiar thing I did notice during the first 7-10 days of healing was quite a swelling round the break, looked for all the world like a little tyre round the bird's leg, under the skin, which seemed to me at the time to be fluid.

Swelling gradually disappeared so I reckoned it was just part of the healing process, leaving a leg that you wouldn't know had ever been broken..
