as others have said take it back and ask to see others in his cot, question is...was the vaccination in date?

if others in his cot is similar then ask wot he has been treating them for?..if he is.

just say to the person ,ur a bit concerned about this and ud like reasurrence that its nothing,or if it does develop into something is he willing to exchange the bird or give u the money back.but realise u will have to set a time limit when this idea will end.

do not panic.

any new birds should be isolated 14 days before putting into your own loft.

the pigeon has endured some stress , moving loft and location, different feed, and water.

tell your friend or yourself to put bird in isolation and keep it clean, light feed and plain water . give a vitamin to the water 10 days after isolation. if the pigeon does not recover ater a total of 21 days cull it.

just remember if you value your birds you would not introduce other birds , without precautions..

Timbara, would you not first be interested to find out if the rest of his birds had it, second get your money back if they do, third keep the bird if it is just a stress issue, forth let the rest of us know the outcome?

I would not just persevere and cull in 21 days

Agree with everything, except with the culling bit!!,stress can cause watery droppings and you should always isolate new birds, surprising how many people don't though.

Last weekend I  brought a new bird in and at the time I had no place to put her where she would be alone, are you saying I made a mistake ? because she looked absolutely spot on to me , looked perfect  in every way and handled a dream in my opinion.  ;D ;)

you could sleep with someone with HIV  and thats not a heavy good licence,

contract it and your days are numbered.   get the picture.

but they looked ok ???????

That was a very good example to use, as It will make people stop and think, (WELL IT WOULD MAKE ME STOP AND THINK). Everyone should always have a place to keep isolated birds, cause what happens if one of your birds get sick and needs isolation? Then where do you put it?

Hello Karl,

The wattery droppings may be due to the stress related to the bird moving to a new location as suggested by Timbarra, but if this is the case the droppings and condition of the bird should improve within a week or so with a little tlc.

If the bird's condition hasn't improved after a week thought I would suspect a health problem.

Two things I think your friend should consider are:

1. what is the health of the fancier's birds that he purchased the pigeon from, and

2. was the vaccine used to vaccinate the pigeon from a bottle that had been used before and resealed again?

I would suggest that your friend checks on the health of the birds of the fancier he bought the pigeon from as previously suggested. If possible this should be done by making a visit to his loft again, bringing the sick bird with you and checking the health of the pigeons housed there. If this isn't possible then  he should contact the seller of the bird and explain his problem and ask the fancier about the condition of his birds, any treatment he has given them etc.

If there doesn't seem to be a health problem at the seller's loft then I would consider the PMV vaccine as a possible cause of the watery dropping.

I have seen this type of complaint occur before in a few fancier's lofts were they have vaccinated late bred youngsters out of a resealed bottle of vaccine that has been used beforehand (in some cases a few months previously). I am not saying this is the cause of the problem but it should be something that shouldn't be dismissed as a possible cause.

Hope this is of help.

PJ

Glad you asked this question - i was going to myself.  I got some young birds a few weeks ago and they seemed to be fine, though the droppings were never particular hard i presumed this was due to stress.

This week though they are all watery- I'm wondering if a cat has been up on the loft whilst i have been at work cause they are quite jittery too - could this be stress or am i looking at something more sinister? :-/

Would expect stress for the first few days, and loose droppings, but would be concerned if that persisted - or got worse.

Change of feeding could be a factor - a diet having a high seed content would cause looser droppings than a diet containing mostly peas & beans.

Had occasion to put oil on my moulting mix recently, predominantly small seeds - and was amazed at the extra oil the seed then soaked up, my usual with all-grain is 30ml, this lot needed 45ml.

Also noted birds drank an awful lot more water with small seed mix, more water intake = more water output = watery droppings.

personally i would rule out stress if a pigeon is eating and drinking the proper amount and quality feeding then its droppings should be firm and round if not then look to feeding ,maize could be damp or any the other grains bad harvest ,what about the other pigeons are they the same if not then its not your feeding

I have found a huge improvement in my birds droppings since i introduced pro biotics as part of the weekly routine, obviousley the birds need to be healthy in the first place though but that is where your annual health programme and loft hygiene comes into play, plenty of threads on here about medication regimes.Stress is a big factor though,I know my birds often have wet droppings the day after a show

It is exactly the same with birds returning after a  race, they produce some extremely watery and funny coloured droppings, which i assume will be stress related as well.

If it's so stressfull showing birds and so stressfull racing birds, then why do we put them through it in the first place? :-/
