DOVEScot Posted June 30, 2008 Author Report Posted June 30, 2008 its wattles look dirty is it feeding young ? could be in a draught ? may have respirity ? yes it is feeding a young one, could be a draught as the loft doors are never shut as the aviary doors are shut
DOVEScot Posted June 30, 2008 Author Report Posted June 30, 2008 could it have had a knock, it looks like the pupil has burst and maybe blind in that eye? Phil It could have been a knock or a peck as it is a dominant cock, always scraping, just worried about it being yellow and cloudy, incase it has an underlying problem, anything good for bathing the eyes :-/
OLDYELLOW Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 i would close birds in loft at night ,but could be from a hard impact to it's eye as stated so may be blind, as for drops to put in eye if one eye cold try this and will disinfect eye http://www.everythingforpets.com/belga_vet_argus_eye_drops.pet/use.id.5.item_id.446.dept.0/
Guest Vic Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 A squirt of normal human eye treatment will work, out of one of those small tubes. But if it is respiratory trouble , you will have to treat the entire stock, with what the vet advises.
andy Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 The eye looks infected to me, try some antibiotic eye drops ie cloramphenicol every 4 hours for a couple of days. Dont bother shutting the loft doors to the aviary, thats not your problem or more than one bird would have it.
DOVEScot Posted June 30, 2008 Author Report Posted June 30, 2008 if its wattery could be one eye cold, It is not watery, quite dry looking
THE FIFER Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 It is not watery, quite dry looking not one eye cold then, may have got a knock, or i have heard before a pigeon has 2 eyelids and has been known for the inner one to stick, making the eye look dull and misty.

No other birds have any problems that I have noticed, I will have a good look at them tomorrow

The second eyelid is moving, it is definately the eyeball that is infected or damaged
THE FIFER Posted June 30, 2008 Report Posted June 30, 2008 maybe its just bloodshot and could clear up in a few days.
DOVEScot Posted June 30, 2008 Author Report Posted June 30, 2008 maybe its just bloodshot and could clear up in a few days. Hopefully as he is a cracking cock

jimmy white Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 The second eyelid is moving, it is definately the eyeball that is infected or damaged remember a pigeon has 3 eye lids ,one is the nicky membrane which acts as a kind of windscreen washer ,this third eyelid could be stuck ,closed, making the eye look odd,,,if it was one eyed cold [usualy linked to respiratory probs ], you would see bubbles on the bottom of the eyelid. if, as you say the pupil is yellow tends to make me think the bird has had an injury, resulting in blindness, whether temporary [i hope] or permanent , bathing it with a cold tea bag would do no harm , if it was respiratory, i would have thought it would show in the younger birds first ,but possible ,if so [or if any others showed signs ]i would treat for respiratory , a bird that has had one eyed cold for some time can result in blindness ,,,,,,,,,maybe better seeing a good avian vet

DOVEScot Posted July 1, 2008 Author Report Posted July 1, 2008 can you tell if he is blind? Definately no reaction in the eye
pjc Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 if there is no reaction in either eye and the pupils appear to have dispersed then he is blind and the kindest thing to do is despatch him as he won't be able to feed etc, let alone find his way around the loft. Phil
