i have just saw one of my youngsters have a poo and it come out like a string and was dark in colour and it took a while to fall off. i thought i maybe worms. any ideas what i could be.

Could be any manner of things. Have you fed the pigeon this morning? check the pigeons crop and see if its digesting its food. I would also isolate it and check its droppings again later.

it is digesting its food, i noticed it just after i fed them. the pigeon is alright its self, its very perky and exercising well. so dont know what it could be. as you say it could be any manner of things? what do you mean buy this.

I'd say there was nothing wrong with the bird given that there are no other outward signs that something is wrong. I've seen it once or twice in the odd bird myself.

 

My guess is that it is to do with the normal water re-absorption system in the bird's gut; usually the body has water to spare and it is mixed in the last part of the 'gut' where the crappy stuff is also 'topped & whipped', then all are expelled as one thro the cloaca.

 

I think what happens here is that all the water is retained (mild dehydration?) , the crappy stuff comes down the tube and instead of coiling up in the last part of the 'gut' - Sunday name copradeum (spelling) - to be mixed with water and flushed, it goes straight through and out poker fashion. And being drier than normal its that bit stickier, and not being the usual compact ball it also takes longer to pass.
