Hiya, I had a hen sounds exactly the same. Bill Carney examined it and told me it was canker of the vent and not curable. Having said that I have a 13 yo hen (2009) with a large growth below the vent, she had it last year and I've kept her. I bought her as a 10yo at louella clearance and she bred me a 10th Open BBC 2007, she laid 3 rounds last year but only one in full in each nest, still have 2 of those. I keep looking at her and thi nking I need to dispose of her but she is such quality even at 13 yo! Doubt that helps except to say she still lays and the eggs are good quality.

sounds like canker if indeed a cock it could be to far gone if got to this stage , try cider vinegar and 4 carrots juiced if caused by fat the carrot juice will get rid of it , feed either barley of wheat 82% 18% maples no maize

Is it possible it could be a Cyst or Swollen Anal Glands?

it could be also excess fat or canker or a simple blockage , or a lack of grit / minerals

normally if it be canker of the bowels then roundabout were the backend is swollen it would be yellow and if its a flesh colour then think it would be fat ,in a hen this is a sign that she has been mass producing eggs and is finished laying  ;)
