Hogni Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 A fellow fancier was just calling me telling me that pigeons in his loft are dropping dead, 2 birds now that seem healthy in every way have dropped dead, one yesterday and one today these are both cocks both have good muscle and don´t seem to have lost waight at all. Also a hen lost its feet yesterday and was waving its wings laying on the floor but today she is like nothing ever happened. The one that died today died right in front of his eyes, it happened like this. The cock flew from his box and up to a perch, few seconds later it fell of the perch and to the floor and it was dead. Anyone had something like this happen or heard of something like this?
carlsberg Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 had a hen like the one you described it went off its legs when it laid so i killed it
Tony C Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 Happened a couple years back to a few local fanciers, Herpes was diagnosed.

Anyone had something like this happen or heard of something like this? Hogni !!!!!! If it was just one pigeon, one could say !!!!!! it could of had a plain old heart seizure etc. But most I think, would have to say it's a bit more serious than that ?????? I'm afraid, going on what you have mentioned. "Now" the first question I would ask your friend is !!!!!! Has he put anything out of the ordinary in there water, or on there feed etc, in the last week or so, or brought a new lot of grain in. Pigeon flyers do some very strange things at times ;D ;D ;D. Following on from that, & this I imagine is a bit of a problem for you etc, living where you do & being so isolated in your area, compared to most of us here. Somehow you have to find a vet etc experienced in pigeons. Highly unlikely I think, in your situation, so the next best option is to suss out an old pigeon flyer ;) someone who has been around a while & more than likely, has seen this before in your area. so with a bit of luck he may be able to come to gripes with your concerns etc for your friend. Now!!!!! If none of the above are of any help etc. the next best thing in my view ?????? is. Go to church & prey hard :P it could help. PS, A word of warning for you !!!!!!! Keep away from his loft of birds, until he sorts it all out. "If you don't", you may find, you transfer his problems that he is having, to your loft of birds, with your visit etc. Enjoy.
homebird Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Go to church and pray it may help ,well you are contacting the oldest flyer there on a wing and a prayer. Lennut tar your becoming priceless ;D hogni best of luck hope things get sorted.
billy wilson Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 the first thing to do is get the corn checked out for spores,i explaned this in an earlier thread,we had 19 die last year and this was put down to foisty corn,we fed stock birds and the racing end with the same corn stock loft is approx 12 yards away from the main racing loft, the young birds which were to the left of the races and new stock we bought in were to the right of the races never ailed nothing at all that is why we put it down to the corn.i wont mension the supplier but the corn was in plastic bags the corn must have sweated plus didnt think about looking at the sell by date,a council worker said she would take our case up after she took a sample but came back next said she could not do anything as pigeons are classed as wild birds.we pigeon men can never win. billy
Guest j.bamling Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 had a hen like the one you described it went off its legs when it laid so i killed it that could also have been Vitamin & mineral deficancy due to lack of grit etc i have seen this a few times before mostly hens, lock them in a nest box put some grit and minerals in and in 2 days the birds fine
Guest IB Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 LT's advice is good - steer clear of this till someone gets to the bottom of what's going on in the loft. Must be at least a Government run Animal Disease Centre on the Island that your friend can contact Hogni? When something like this is happening it does no good guessing - either get a vet in or the next bird that dies, bag and refrigerate and get the body for autopsy as soon as possible.
jimmy white Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 the last time i seen anythinglike that , was an overdose of the antibiotic tiamutin , i would def advice a pm on these birds
Hogni Posted March 5, 2008 Author Report Posted March 5, 2008 Thanks for all the advice, i told him yesterday to contact a vet and get some advice and he was going to call me again tonight. There is one thing i will not do, go for a visit and see whats going on, i know better then that.

It's been a while now Hogni !!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D what's happened to your mates ??????? pigeons etc. I hope there not all dead are they :P . You must have come to some conclusion in the end. "Re his problems". Let us all know now, I'm intrigued, into what the final outcome was. Enjoy.
Hogni Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 Well, my friend did not go by my advice about contacting a vet and get the birds tested, he decided to test his luck and do nothing and hope for the best. Now i can tell you that his stock loft is almost empty and the future of his loft, the youngsters that were in the nests have also been dying at all ages, some because thier parents died and others for no appearent reason like the old ones. I asked him why he was bothering me to help him and find out what might be wrong and advice him on what to do, just so that he would do nothing only spend my time.

Another one of the fools/idiot's, as as it is. But at least you tried to help him ;) with good advise etc, & that's all any of us can do ???????, when you really think about it. Enjoy.
Guest shadow Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 you can't help some people no matter how hard you try ??)
doo.racer Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I would look at two different issues. The hen going off as discribed is not so uncommon if she has a calcium deficiency when eggs are being produced. There are many things available to help here. Grit and minerals are a must and also liquid calcium added to the drinking water is helpful especially in older birds. A little milk would also bring her round in a very short time. As to the cocks sudden demise, my first thought is slug pellets. If any have been put down or even introduced on a plant recenly brought in then beware.
