paul10121968 Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 have been reading up on pigeon ailments is going light and yb sickness the same ailment because the symptoms are allmost the same,im confused, can anyone help.
Tony C Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 E-coli is the main culprit of pigeons going light. Pigeons should start to pick up after a few days if they've gone down with YBS unless a secondary infection has jumped on the back of it.
jimmy white Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 "going light " in pigeons is not a recognised desease, its more a phrase we use as an ailment causing this" going light" "yb sickness" is not a recognised desease, and more a phrase that fanciers use,, in sick yb,s both these conditions could be due to many factors, the most common one is e,coli, causing y.birds to be sick and loose weight, usually followed on [like most of these type ailments ] with secondry infections,,,,,,,,,but worms cocci, canker will make any birds go light if infested and any one of these problems can [due to the weakened immune system ] cause secondry and even thirdly infections in the pigeons , of any of these type,,,,,,, i,e any one of these infections, usually follow on with any of the other , so for a start its well worth keeping the worms,,cocci, and canker level below, the danger level, therefore giving the bird a better chance of fighting any e coli infection it may catch ,,, prevention is sometimes better than the cure,, most of these ailments are due to stress , too many birds in to small a loft , not enough air space, and dirty lofts,, but off course birds can contract these ailments ,when put beside birds from these type of lofts i,e transporters baskets etc, therefore quite a battle at times to keep these ailments at bay.
Guest IB Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Thought 'going light' was an old-fashioned term used yonks ago to describe a condition in which the bird basically rapidly lost weight, wasted away to nothing and died. Some of today's vets think that it was full-blown cocci, tho we knew about that disease then too, so don't know for sure that they were one and the same? YBS is a puzzle. Certainly never had anything like that back then. In fact I think the worst I had back then was one bird with one eye cold. I believe pigeons were generally healthy then too.
