Guest IB Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 high cocci count means the birds had cocci which means they are not immune mate it means they needed to be treated a plus 2 cocci count is fine plus 5 is a high cocci count any stress factor could have brought on a problem the product i used eliminated the cocci and left a very respected vet puzzeled how it was managed. Sorry but you are quite wrong there. For a bird to have coccidiosis the organisms must breach the gut wall, reproduce within the cell walls, breach those cells, invade others & breed, etc etc until the wall is full of gaping holes - the gut contents then cross the breached barrier and enter the blood stream which then spreads multiple infections throughout the body. Its this 'blood poisoning' that kills the bird, not cocci - they just allow it to happen. Cocci that can't get near the gut wall and breach it can't harm the bird. Gazillions of friendly bacteria sticking 10 or so thick to the gut wall mucous lining make sure cocci can't reach the wall, and they also produce natural antibiotics that kill them and other stuff too.

me Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 A lot of what you have seen here is crap. First of all, bovine sourced probiotics are not suitable for pigeons. This includes yogurt, beastings (colostrum) or even plain milk. Second, most of the other stuff you see with these big claims are not much good because much of the active ingredient is lost to the stomach acid. If it is healthy pigeons you want, do the following. Use dry deep litter and stir it around every day the ensure there are no damp bits. You can use a variety of things to start it off. Wood chips (not shavings), furnace sand, proprietry floor dressing (Versa Laga do one for about 7:00). Feed your birds on a light diet. Do not feed many peas and no beans at all. Mix mixed grit and several pick stones (broken up) and vitamineral together in a small bucket and feed fresh every day (be careful when you start them on this because they will go mad for it, and some will throw up at first). Stock at the rate of no more than 1 bird to 38 cu ft of space. Make sure you have a gentle flow of air throught he loft, exiting at ceiling or roof level. No draughts. If you start off by doing this you will be well on the way to creating a loft of healthy pigeons. Most other things you can do will bring the birds into super health leading to form. By the way, if you do as I say, you will save yourself money and a lot of worry. But will they win? JUST BY DOING THAT?

Bruno lad have you started to read my old posts? The pigeon equivalent of septicaemia is what kills pigeons infected with cocci! Kill (cidal) the invaders in the blood stream and the condition is cured. Malucidin used to be remarkable in its ability to fight the extreme forms that afflicted young birds. Where do you get that now? No idea but there are now more modern and equally effective cures. Dry droppings do help by the way, big time!!! Beware pro bio products with this, because once the gut wall is breached they are absolutely useless!!

Beware pro bio products with this, because once the gut wall is breached they are absolutely useless!! We've had this conversation before - Leon Whitney? Malucidin is now a banned substance, it caused farm animals to abort. Agreed, good bacteria are only 'good' when they are in the right places. If they get into the bloodstream through a breach - a cut - they can cause infection just like any other micro-organism. But in the right places - all the mucous membranes that form the barriers between the 'outside' and the internal body - they become a very important part of the immune system. And don't be fooled into thinking the body doesn't know they are there - it does, some sort of 'friend / foe' recognition, hello friend & welcome, stay as long as you like; foe, and it attacks with its own armies, and its allies, the 'friendly' bacteria. Friendly bacteria can also be found in the birds droppings, so as far as infective droppings are concerned, you can forget about it, acid environment kills them and then they all dry out and die, and if eaten by the birds this become the equivalent of an immune booster, a vaccination dose.
