my birds always tread in it in box perches and floor, even though i scrape daily. Cant really tell how well they are formed in the boxes either through the grills. I do find the occasional unspoiled dropping which looks similar to above.

How come your birds dont tread in it? Do you put them a block in to roost on?  :-/

Any tips?

Please do not turn this tread in to just jokes.

I do think you can see how the inside of your birds are by looking at the droppings and i do like to see nice and pink skin.

To some its just shxx but to me it tells me a story.

a very good flyer up near us keeps very good and healthy pigeons winning out of turn yet he had 1 good cock who won and scored for him but always had very wet droppings he tried all he knew to dry him up finally he managed but lost him the next week any thoughts on why?

not sure why he lost him but trying so many things to try his droppings up can make the bird dehydrate that's what could have happened.

That would tie in with the birds we have that drink a lot at times and have loose droppings:-/

they do like to stand on the block most of the time or lay down on top of it.

get you and strappers point, like you all i like to see dry wll formed droppings but this cocks droppings were wet indicating there was(normally) a problem so why did he perform so well  :)

agree with you leighton we tend to use minerals sparingly but use alot of grit u reckon the use of to many supplements cause wet droppings

Posted

i have fresh grit minerals and pick stone  for the birds every day how come no one makes a song and dance about them ?

they cost very little and they take up lots of room. but they are the best thing a bird needs every day.

so what supplements makes them drink more water?

MINE HAVE BLACK MINERALS ALL THE TIME BUT ONLY TAKE VERY LITTLE THAT WAY AND DONT DRINK MORE ..

IF YOU DONT GIVE THEM FOR A BIT AND REINTRODUCE THEM THEY GORGE AND DRINK TO MUCH

they drink more after black minerals because of the salt content.

how many eat a sandwhich and require a drink to wash it down ;)

i feel sorry for the birds that the bloke you are talking about he was doing them more harm than good i do think you have to look at the pro's and the con's when you give any thing to the birds.

a little is good but lots is poison.

when the birds have it for the 1st time to do go nuts for it...this is a sign that they are missing something in their diet, this black mineral is giving them that missing ingredient.

have you tried the red minerals too?

i found the best black mineral to be the natural(company)one....but i do use different types.

my birds get black and red in different pots .

I agree with everything that Leighton has said except for one small detail. If you want to use barley, and I use lots, it should be best quality feed barley. Not malting barley.

A lot of birds have bad droppings because the loft is not right. As Leighton says, you need to offset the humidity that you have at this time of the year. A humid loft is very bad for the birds and the droppings will never be right for long. The loft should have plenty of light and air. The stocking rate should be low because overcrowding can cause stress and stress causes wet droppings.

Minerals are very important to pigeons as has already been said. I mix my own and feed fresh every day. I do not like the ones that contain a lot of salt, aniseed or small seed because it creates an artificially stimulated appetite for it and that leads to wet droppings.

Again I agree with Leighton on the subject of artificial stimulants that are advertised everywhere. If these companies had to rely on me for a profit they would go bust. When I do need to give the birds something extra I put it onto the food.

The birds should look really good now and have nice droppings with that bit of down on them.

In regards to treatment, there should not be any need unless they have worms of course.
