jimbhoy29 Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 would u ever treat for canker when the pigeons are sitting on the 2nd round of eggs and with some young in the nest. or leave it till later on how long after weaning young birds would u treat them for canker/worms etc..
Guest Davy Fleming Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Certainly wouldn't be treating for canker just for the sake of it. Would have them tested and if found to be bad enough would do it right away. I have made it a very strict rule that I only treat for a problem after it has been diagnosed by someone who is very competent in there analysis . But the guessing game creates more problems than you had in the first place and costs good hard earned money. So take a tip from myself and a few others on the site who are very good at giving advice and it will be a short cut to success.
Novice Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I don't think it's a good idea to treat for anything while rearing. The young are being pumped full of medication which they do not need at unknown doses---probably more than recommended. Personally I would not treat. I would not treat young for anything unless they needed it. Before and during racing I might treat for canker. I have not treated for worms in years but might do so this year.

bullcock Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Most people who treat for canker "blind-treat" as a perventative that means the birds don't actually have a canker problem but they treat to keep the count down especially when rearing young birds. I treat once a month a half course to keep the count down and the birds healthy, if the birds had been diagnoised with canker then i would treat the full course.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Novice , you just said you wouldn't treat for anything unless they needed it then said you might treat for worms this year as not done it it for years so why would you want to do this.

Davy, last year I became conscious that I had not treated for worms for ages. I do treat with Ivomec for external parasites which (it is claimed) is effective against certain worms (this is contrary to the view of Tom Pennicoat) who suggested the wormer must be ingested. I actually bought a wormer and when I read the bottle it said"do not treat during the moult". By this time the youngsters which are natural were moulting like champions so I never used the wormer. It is still in my basket store---so I might treat for worms this year just to use this medication before the birds start to moult.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Novice , Hi mate , Wasn't getting on at you but you are going to use something blindfolded just because you have paid for it and know there is nothing worse in paying for something then throwing it out. Wouldn't even dream of treating for something that MAY work or a be a waste of time. Have found out over the years that the best way to success by saying success I mean a short cut to getting them right internally is TEST TREAT and you will have short cut so don't buy till you know . The quicker they are right inside the quicker they will perform to the best of there ability. Good luck anyway mate .
Guest cloudview Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 dont think there,s such as thing as preventative treatments , talking about the routine things now , canker cocci , worms . you can treat for this as much as you want , it wont stop them picking it up again the next time they are mixed with other birds , so its a rollercoaster effect , iam not talking any vaccinations in the above chapter got to go now take some night nurse for the bad throat i might get next week l.o.l
