FoxesFan4Ever Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Hi all, In conversation with a friend yesterday the subject of grit came up. The point about giving grit whilst giving any medicines was discussed and I was just wondering what other members think. Straight yes or no answers please. Should grit be given when giving any kind of meds to the birds whether preventative or curative?

I know that certain meds require you to omit grit from the birds as calcium binds the chemicals involved rendering them useless. As for preventative, I would not encourage it.

As others have said its only certain meds that you are required to take away the grit and thats generally doxycycline or any of the cylcline drugs as it stops the meds working. Any other meds are fine. My birds get fresh grit daily and have never had an issue but i do remove it if giving doxycycline but thats rare these days as i dont get many issues with respiratory disease these days since changing ventilation on the lofts. Jas spot on you only need to remove minerals and grit with some medication , and if are treating under the instruction of a vet they will advise you properly
north wales novice- Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 man of few words ;D ;D ;D ;D i read the original post request Mark , asked for a simple YES or NO . (evil)(evil) andy.
OLDYELLOW Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 another consideration is how hard your water is if living in a hard ward area then water should be distilled as well by boiling and cooling
pjc Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 spot on you only need to remove minerals and grit with some medication , and if are treating under the instruction of a vet they will advise you properly Depends on the vet! There are a lot of vets that will prescribe anti's, don't know about what fanciers give the birds, grit etc and also never give advice on aftercare once the course of anti's has finished!
Shortcut Lofts Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Never give grit when medicating. Also i give bottled water when medicating.

Could we not formulate a list on here as well in its own section. Not just vets because they've used them and thought they we ok but vets who actualy know about pigeons, i.e Frank Harper, Liz Rigby etc
Guest Owen Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 No grit while giving antibiotics. That should only be for a short period while you are useing the antibiotics. Then back to the grit and minerals.

Not just vets because they've used them and thought they we ok but vets who actualy know about pigeons, i.e Frank Harper, Liz Rigby etc well im sure I could start a thread and put it on sticky called recommeded avian vets and have a list of avian vets Then members could send me the vet they use and would recommend to others
OLDYELLOW Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 there you go guys list started , if you can give me any other avian vets you can recommend with as much details as possible by pm ill add it to the list , this will certainly help others get to vets that know and specialise in Avian health
Old Pied Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Remove grit while giving antibiotics (all kinds just to be on safe side). Other medication, leave grit in. Regards Old Pied
