Deano Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 A fancier once told me that healthy pigeons dont stop eating when they are hungry they just carry on eating.so I always follow the rule that when 1 in 5 birds go for a drink then they've had enough. ie if u have 20 birds when 4 have been to the drinker they've had enough. Also when they start to leave barley in the bottom of the trough they have had enough. Hope this helps
GREENGRASS Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 i would be careful with youngsters who are on the darkness system as they will need a little more feeding and care as they are still growing and going through a full body moult. like jimmy said i also like youngsters to have a full crop for settling down at night, but when training them to trap the late ones get nothing only a pink clip ring and i find they are not late more than once. when training starts ie.. tossing i will change from v.l. junior extra to gerry plus and then control the % of protien building up to a race day.
speedbird Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 i feed light feed morning then evening get as much as they want & i remove water this way can only as much as they can take giving all the others chance that eat slower to get there intake of food instead of eating too quickly & having a drink then going back for more or grabing best perch while ever they are eating i keep on puting food down then water is put back in it realy works try it
Peckedhen Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 good news sue lets hope they keep it up. They didn't! :-/ I've tried cutting the food right back and I mean right back but still they don't come when I call. It's back to the drawing board I think! I've been catching them, to put them out, so they are wary of me also, the fantails which live outside don't help because they all lounge around on my house roof together. Help guys, what do you think? Keep them in for a few days make sure they know the shaking tin means nosh time? Don't feed them at all for a day, see if they trap then? I'm finding this so hard. The neighbours don't mind at the moment but, it's only three birds. There are another six in the nest .....I'll have to crack it before they are out or there are going to be far too many and if they take to sunbathing on neighbours roofs then I think there will be complaints! :-/

Guest WINGS 04 Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 I FEED MY YOUNG BIRDS MAPLES AND TIC BEANS AND HORMOFORM UP TO 2 WEEKS BEFOR THE START TRANING
snowy Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 as westy said dont let them out if your fantails are sitting on roof, as they will pick up the habbit, shooo them off roof & dnt let them in untill they fly, its a lot of running around, but it worked for us, "me & westy" (and im the one doing the running around) lol. ;D even my 2 first eldest birds (badwing & his mate) (roof sitters) trained them now too. flying for an hour without touching roof.(apart from once or twice)
Peckedhen Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 Thanks Westy and Snowy........tricky one this as the fantails are out on the roof all the time as they live in the dovecote. :-/ I cant see a way round it unless I bring the fantails in. :-/ :-/
snowy Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 do you intend to race? if not dnt worry so much, but still try n make them fly to keep fit & healthy, hose pipe to the roof does the trick, how the all coming on now? you have done real well considering you aint been at it for that long. well done/
Peckedhen Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 No, I'm not intending to race - not at the moment. There's no problem making them fly - they love it and are constantly taking off for twenty minutes or so. I cant shut the fantails in the dovecote, it would be cruel as they wouldnt have much room to move around. I guess it means they would have to be moved into a loft!
bewted Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 fantails in loft and use as sitters,,,,,,,,,,,result is extra few logans, good, yeh?
snowy Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 fantails in loft and use as sitters,,,,,,,,,,,result is extra few logans, good, yeh? well said bewted, just use em as trappers, keep say 2 pairs keep em paired up & only let cocks out when you want logans in, & the fans willdash in helping the logans to trap.
Peckedhen Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 Erm, sorry to be thick but, wont they mate with the Logans and I'll end up with birds that cant fly well or home like the first ones I had? :-/
westy Posted April 22, 2006 Author Report Posted April 22, 2006 Erm, sorry to be thick but, wont they mate with the Logans and I'll end up with birds that cant fly well or home like the first ones I had? :-/ no they should not if you have a spare fantail or logan that are no paired up they might mate but if are all in pairs they should not.
Guest shadow Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 they will mate with the logans if they get the chance just dont let them hatch the eggs
