Do pigeons need grit?

Best grit you can get is from shells down the beach. Smash them up and there you go. All free and as much as you want. Oh yes , Sammy what do you think is in the gizzard? GRIT OF COURSE.

shows how much you know then anything a pigeon eats goes into the gizzard need to do better than that to convince me other wise ,but as they say a fool and his money are easy parted  ;D ;D ;D ;D

JIMMY , my birds nevre go fielding mate and i got field over the road !! they can pick what they like on the lawn but it minerals they are after,

 

FIFER, birds that lay soft shelled eggs are lackingin mineral content, and need a calcium supplement not grit grit does not make egg shells it does not even give pigeons enough calcium to sustain making the eggs. their RDA would be a whole sack of grit 52KG if that was the source of their calcium !!!! and thats per day mate . yes per day!

 

give pigeons minerals pink and black, and calcium supplement in water every week and you will see they look bette,

Failure to provide shell grit can and will result in soft shelled eggs, rough shelled eggs, egg bound hens and rickets in the nest babies. Shell grit is needed as a source of calcium aswell as aiding the digestive system.

A lot of replies on here but has anybody tried rearing some birds where some get grit and some don't, and if so what was the difference if any ?

well david h , best give your pigeons a pint of milk as thats great source of calcium mate, but i do think your stuck in the 1950s still. your not gonna listen so whats the point.  stay in your time warp mate.

i not fed grit to my pigeons for years and reared youngsters and not a thing wrong with them, i even had a few guys from this forum come to my loft and they will tell you that my birds look better than most i can tell you...
