I peel the cloves of a complete bulb and put on a 3 litre container with fresh water added as and when required ;)  Once I feel the cloves are past there best, I use the water to put into the birds bath, and replenish the container with a new bulb of garlic. ;)

WAS JUST WONDERING HOW MUCH GARLIC TO YOU PUT IN THE WATER FOR OLD BIRDS ? THANKS !!

I've been using garlic for years and frankly one of the problems I've had is finding the answer to the question you have asked. I've been faced with problems garlic use prevents so that is proof enough for me that I have not been using it correctly.

Garlic bulbs come in all sizes and the bulb Fancier A uses might be twice the weight of the bulb Fancier B goes and buys on Fancier A's advice. Advice by clove is even riskier as even in the same bulb, the cloves are usually different sizes too.

Tony C uncovered a scientific paper referenced on a poultry diseases website which talks about a successful experiment using 2% garlic water solution as a preventative against an actual disease, and 4-5% garlic water solution  as an actual cure for a disease in chickens (Candida - a yeast).

2% solution is 20g garlic per 1 ltre of water.

4% solution is 40g garlic per litre of water.

So its really a scales and measuring jug job, to make sure its doing the job you expect from it.

the best is raw crushed garlic.

but "dosage" will depend on the "potency" of each particular variety. in general, larger varities are less potent than the smaller ones. you could tell thru the smell when you crush them.
