jimmy white Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 does anyone use peanuts in preparing birds for longer races or any other uses
Guest Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Always give mine peanuts when the longer racers come along, and on day of basketing give em as many as they want. And they are getting a few a day now for the moult.
Guest shadow Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Yes Jimmy I use peanuts for the longer races each bird going to the race gets 3 every day as a treat and I only use peanuts fit for human consumption, not the ones sold as wild bird food. Peanuts can carry a lot of toxins and mould which you can not see with the naked eye. also if they are not stored right they soon get a fungus on them. I dont feed many as you know pigeons will gorge them selves on them and the are fattening fly hard fly fair
snowy Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 ive tried a few times to give mine some, but they never touch them, even tried when they are hungry, & even broke them up a bit
jimmy white Posted October 4, 2005 Author Report Posted October 4, 2005 once they get the taste of them they will eat them with relish, but as shadow says they are very fattening,i found them very usefull for the the longer races and in the rearing of young birds, and as i say once they get the taste of them ,theyll go daft on them , so broken down a bit are very handy in keeping birds tame, i used to also buy them for human consumtion , a little at a time. i found i was eating them myself, and my droppings were more like a nutty bar ;D ;D ;D p.s not salted peanuts
speedbird Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 started my yb on em this year & love em gonna start ob during winter to get use to em
Guest Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Just a note in support of what Shadow says about toxins. Peanuts for 'animal' consumption are allowed by law to have a 5% aflotoxin (mould) contamination. Peanuts for human consumption are required by law to have 0% contamination.
carl Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 ive tried a few times to give mine some, but they never touch them, even tried when they are hungry, & even broke them up a bit Snowy a freind and good flyer told me he stopped feeding peanuts for one youngbird season and these youngbirds never ate them in the future seasons but the ones that always got peanuts love them. I always treat my birds to a few peanuts a few days before the race.my stock get a treat now and then also.

Peckedhen Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Does this kill any bacteria or mould Speight? I use bird peanuts as those for human consumption are expensive. I'm having second thoughts after reading this thread. :-/
Guest Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 I prefer not to use peanuts of any description, would rather use Safflower to build them up for the longer races
Guest Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Hyacinth, does peanuts makes pigeons thrisk or not because there's a lot of salts in peanuts is it?

Shogun Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 An excerpt from Bob Rowland's article: "for the longer distances I use omega 3 oils which are such as Flax seed oil, hemp oil, walnut oil, olive oil, rape seed oil, cod liver oil, and so forth. I DO NOT use oils such as corn oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, etc.... These are high in saturated fats or better known as n-6's (Omega 6)."
