OLDYELLOW Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 safflower hearts are smaller than sunflower seeds and easier for birds to eat and im most continental mixes , you can buy sunflower thats removed from the shell as hulled sunflowerseed , the choice is yours Jos Thone uses the hulled sunflower seeds to great effect his results speak for itself http://www.thone.be/
adam owen Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 just had look at that thone site very good the feeding bit is a bit of getting ya head round tho
Tony C Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 I use sunflower seeds (hulled) more so for the distance races. Feed them now just to get them used to them then cease till later in the year.
Guest pigeonguy147 Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 thanx everyone for your input i will now use them for a short while and let the birds get used to them
duncandoo Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 when you feed sunflower hearts you should be very carefull as these can put the weight on very quickly use them sparingly and only when the birds are racing remember a lot of seasons are lost by overweight birds in the winter i would never use any oily seeds in the winter it is easy to put the weight on but hard to take off plus the internal fat that you cannot see
Guest IB Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 I brought a small packet home from Asda as tit-bit for birds, they didn't touch them. I also wondered why huskless? Is that just for humans as a snack, or are they also sold like this for birds?

duncandoo Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 used to split a bag between us but beware they dont keep for more than a season and you dont give the birds a lot just the week before the big ask

Guest LBuddle Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Sunflower Hearts are in my opinion better and more digestable source of fats than peanuts, We have been using them for 5 years with sucess! Lee.
