gazza1 Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 recently lost 08 birds.. now quite a few 09 youngsters...does everyone go through same problem..i wonder if people are keeping them once they get them in..as i am new to the sport i am amazed none of my missing birds have ever been reported, perhaps buying or breeding their own.. people are keep them in, instead of reporting them or maybe in portsmouth they keep them....i cant believe as a new comer no-one has got one in..my birds have mixed in with a few local birds in flying out yet nothing reported...one day i may have enough to race...i have had a few strays in and even taken them back to owners..each said thanks but not happy to see their birds..is it worth the time and effort..love the birds but losses i wonder is it worth the effort..gladly have my missing birds back at this stage of staring up...to many to list sorry..come on pompey people report some..
phillips Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 how are you losing them are you over- crowding mate ?
gazza1 Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 whats that mean..? i have lost 08 and 09 with no reports..just asking if people in area report them as it dont appear so..not suggesting people have got them in but met so called fanciers who have other birds in and had them a while but still not reported..if such good sports people why ? i have lost a few and wonder being new to this ?
Tony C Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 The odd pigeon may go into someone elses loft and not get reported but most pigeon folk are like yourself and do report them. Why your losing them is another question.
gazza1 Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 no idea why i am losing so many but will keep at it until i crack it..love the birds and sport ,,,gets me down with losses....just amazed no-one reports thats all i am saying..know a few not happy when you repot them..only ever had one reorted in pompey and collected in a half hour..yet other fanciers dont seem to happy when i phone them..i even delivered all i got in locally
jimmy white Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 yes , i think your right , not so many get reported nowadays,, that reminds me ive one to put on the found column now

pjc Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I would sugest there maybe an underlying problem with your management if you are losing a lot of birds off the loft!
Guest WINGS 04 Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 had to put down 2 the day think the must have got chased and only 2 week till they are of the darkness
chaz Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Had a young Flor Engels cock reported in Durham , but he will hopefully be home on saturday being brought home by courier, so if the fancier that reported the bird is on this site my thanks for reporting him to me, via his wingstamp
blaz Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 from1997 to 2005 i lost count of the birds i lost.i had 1 reported so dont hold your breath
gazza1 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 birds not overcrowded..glad others are reported..i do disagree with people binning other peoples birds..dont let them in if you dont want the trouble of reporting any..i would prefer you put them out but i wouldnt call you sportpeople if you can bin other fanciers birds some dont want them but others do..these must be sad people to destroy others birds..i disagree with those who abuse those that do report...i am not holding my breathe to get any calls on any missing birds...i have managed to be lucky enough to have a few youngsters return..still amazed no older birds from training flights have returned or been reported..still reckon people hold them..come on you sad people let others have their birds back they dont belong to you sort your own out...live in copnor for the person who asked..hope you have a good season
Guest GRIZZLE GRAHAM Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD BIRDS FLYING OUT TO KEEP YOUR YOUNG BIRDS DOWN FOR A WHILE UNTIL THEY HAVE HAD TIME TO HAVE A GOOD LOOK AROUND?
billy wilson Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 WE DROPPED 4 YOUNG BIRDS LAST MONDAY GONE PHONE NUMBER ON RINGS NOT ONE REPORTED,PROBABLY WAIT TILL THEY ARE GOING IN AND OUT OF THERE LOFTS THEN REPORT THEM THAT GOES ON A LOT IF THEY TAKE A FANCY TO THEM.
Guest numpty01 Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 then what i do when reported is go and get them then pair um up thats spoils there plans
Guest canfordlofts Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 yeah my "garden doves" go missing all the time as thes live in a dovecote not a loft like my others in stead of killing an unwanted bird i just let them live in the dovecote i must lose on every week i even have racing pigeons fly in with my racers but they do not like to hang a round with my garden doves strange that?
Guest strapper Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 anyone think he just may have hawks around the loft??..only takes one strike to lose many. anyone that says they dont lose birds around the loft(young) are either lying or just lucky...i dont see why just because he looses birds that summut must be wrong with them?. we all get fly aways at some time and if he,s on a flight training path for feds then its asking for trouble.
Guest numpty01 Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 try liveing by here with everything that comes over then cry about loseing youngsters ;)
Guest strapper Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 try liveing by here with everything that comes over then cry about loseing youngsters ;) exatly what i mean chris...it used to be the same here when the welsh north road and the new north both flew north.
Guest numpty01 Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 one year myself and the late des powell lost 83 youngsters in one swoop when birds went thro here when the training transporter let go at chepstow after they then publicised dates and days
Guest strapper Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 ive lost 16 youngbirds already, lost 7-8 1st time out.when next doors birds flew right out of their loft over them...as our lofts are 6ft apart.....ill have to get some strays in ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest numpty01 Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 ;D ;Dfour here at moment who.s i have no idea but sat on loft
Guest IB Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 No offence, but like others who have posted similar, if you are losing a lot of youngsters 'off the top' then you must look at the way you manage them if only to rule that out as a possible cause for your losses. As to other fanciers keeping them, in 6 years, I've only known of 2 of my youngsters go into other lofts, both within 500 yards of where they live! Not something I would expect them to do, or encourage. To reduce 'off the top' losses, I take 2 or 3 weeks to school mine (vaccination / viewing cage / come when called / basket training / release through doors) before I let them out, usually early morning. Took a bit longer than that this year and the other change was I put them out for the first time in the evening (Wednesday) - 3 did a runner, and were missing at nightfall. I put remainder out Thursday morning, ended up with 5 AWOL at nightfall, including the 3 from previous evening. Kept them in today (to steady them up) and put OBs out. 4 came back today, leaving 1 of Wednesday's still missing. Bird may have been been taken, I have not had sight of it since flying with my OBs Thu am. I don't normally have this bother, but I know my early schooling drills it in where they belong, and they are strong enough on the wing to keep themselves out of trouble out there.
Guest kev d Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 the more your yb can look out of the loft during the day the better they will be i built a big aviary on the front of my yb bird loft this season and there in there all day there out every night for 2 hrs doing what they want up to now touch wood havent losed any
