Bird Lover Too Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Where can I report a pigeon who found refuge on our covered front porch during this cold rain/wind? Said pigeon has a band on it's leg, is very comfortable around us, is eating the sunflower seeds we put out for it and has taken a perch on our porch lamp. We do not know anyone in our Hillsborough NC area who has Racing Pigeons.
Novice Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 You must take the details from it's ring and post them on here then someone will tell you who it should be reported to
Bird Lover Too Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Thanks, Chatters. We found two orange bands on the left leg -- nothing printed on them; On the right leg there was a red band with either the number 90 or 06. All bands seemed to be make of plastic material. There were no markings on the wings. Hope this helps. We have not been able to contain the pigeon, but it stay on lamp post. It's now 10:40 EDT in Hillsborough, North Carolina, USA
bruno1 Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 One for our American members, I think. The organisation to whom it should be reported is the AU [American Union?] and the band will probably include these letters as well as numbers ~ which will be needed to identify the bird's owner.
bruno1 Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I've PM'd our member Don. He lives in Texas. He is in a better position to help than anyone this side of the pond.
Bird Lover Too Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 Bruno1, Thanks for your two messages. Since I could not find any ID, I found the American Racing Pigeon Union, http://www.Pigeon.org, and checked out their "find a club near you". I hope that they might have received information on a missing pigeon and we will be able to return it to it's home. I am not sure that I'm using this site to the best advantage -- am not familiar with doing this, but everyone has been very helpful. We are enjoying the bird but unfortunately are not in a position to commit to taking care of it for the long term.
bruno1 Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Well done so far. I think your contacting a club near to you is ideal. They will probably arrange someone to collect the pigeon from you and get it back to its owner. That's how it would be done here too. Sorry I couldn't have been more help.
