Received a letter from fancier who purchased my book ‘The Dewar Trophy The first 50 Years’, I would just like to give you a few comments on your book. I really enjoyed reading this book in its entire content. It’s a very good book to buy as a present for a fellow fancier who is interested in multi performance distance pigeons, their background and the fanciers that bred and raced them.  Another fancier phoned to say how much he had enjoyed the book and did not appreciate the quality of these Dewar Trophy winners. The majority are bred from top distance winners, and the stories on ‘Fortune Lady’ ‘Kingdom Spirit’ ‘Auld Reekie’ and latterly ‘Bonnyrigg Lionheart’ are breathtaking. You must have spent hours and hours going through national results to obtain all this wonderful information and I take my hat off to you; well, done’. It is nice to get some positive feedback on the book and I’m glad fanciers are enjoying my efforts.

Late Bob Blyth of Kirkcaldy

Received an email from Craig Blyth who wrote; ‘Dear Sir, I am writing as my late father, Robert ‘Bob’ Blyth, was a subscriber to your magazine for as long as I can remember. Bob died peacefully at home in Kirkcaldy, Fife on Sunday, 24th March just short of his 88th birthday. He had bred and raced pigeons since his early teens and remained interested in all aspects of pigeon racing right up to his death. As a youth, Bob joined the Rosslyn Homing Society in Kirkcaldy after receiving his first pigeon from his Uncle Mick in the late 1940s. Later on, Bob joined the Homing Societies at Novar and St. Serfs where he made a great many friends for life. Bob was a farmer and was fortunate that he had enough space to keep several lofts. He had around 300 pigeons at his peak. Bob enjoyed many successes at Novar, including winning the 1970 Avranches race, which was 521 miles and 370 yards. His winning pigeon was called ‘My Swallow’ and with his winnings he bought his wife, Margaret, a new sheepskin coat. And he immortalized ‘My Swallow’ by commissioning a portrait which hung in my parents' house for years. Bob said that his biggest thrill in pigeon racing was the Nantes race in the 1971/72 season. A pigeon that had flown 620 miles arrived at 10pm. He saw it coming in over the woods from one of the sheds at Bogleys Farm. He couldn’t believe it had flown all that distance in one day. It was 17th in the East section of the Scottish National Flying Club. Bob was consistently successful in the 1970s and 80s, which was testament to his dedication given that farming was a full-time job and he also had a young family. He did employ his young sons as lookouts during races, particularly when he was milking the cows. They had instructions to run at full speed from the lofts to the byre shouting ‘PIGEON!’ to alert him and he’d run up to the loft to time the bird in. More latterly, he flew from the St. Serfs Homing Society and when they were forced to relocate, he hosted the club at his farm. Members of the club are racing his pigeons this season as a tribute to him. He already has one victory to his name! I’ll finish on a quirky note. Around 1950, Bob and his cousin attended a Scottish Cup tie at Starks Park, the home of Raith Rovers. As his cousin’s dad was a keen fan, they smuggled a homing pigeon into the ground which they used to send the half-time score to him. Who needs mobile phones?! Yours Sincerely Craig Blyth. ‘I wrote to Craig asking if I could use this tribute in my weekly column and his reply was as follows JM’.  You're very welcome and I have absolutely no problem with you using the info and pictures in whatever way you wish

News from Pete Penman who wrote; We were at Grantham on Saturday 25th of May, a distance of some 240-255 miles to our members. The convoy was liberated at 07-15am in a light east wind, the birds motored up the road. Taking 1st, 2nd & 6th places was Gary Hall of Coaltown of Balgonie club who has his team of racers on fire. First over the board was a 2-year-old blue hen, followed by a yearling chequer cock. With his 3rd bird a 2-year-old chequer cock. All birds were home bred Herman Custers flying on roundabout. Third place goes to the loft last week’s winner; Rosyth's Hugh Gormley with a 2-year-old that just edged out clubmates Lou Mitchell & Darren Stonehouse by less than a yard per minute. Fifth spot goes to Leuchars Eric & Liz Young; with Liz’s yearling red cock hitting the trap and running to get into the loft. His sire was bred from a gift bird from Dyke Armour of Leven and the dam is a homebred chequer hen that scored from Ramsgate last year.

St. Serfs club was won by Sandy Proctor with a yearling cock. Kind regards once again Joe your Pete Penman

Central & East of Scotland Amalgamation Federation Championship 2024

Andy Miller forwarded me the following information on the above Amalgamation. All Federation’s compete against each other for weekly points to be the Central and East of Scotland Amalgamation Federation Champions! The first 5 pigeons for each of the 11 (currently) Federations/Areas in the Amalgamation placed on a list, in order of highest velocity to lowest, and score points as follows for all 3 Amalgamation races flown. There are (Currently approx.10 Federations/Areas = 50 positions). 1st place wins 60 points; 2nd x 55 points, 3rd x 52 points, 4th x 50 points, 5th x 48, 6th x 46, 7th x 44, 8th x 43 – dropping a point for each pigeon down to 50th place = 1 point. The points total, for each race, of each Federation’s first 5 pigeons (if 5 are timed-in and included in the result) are added together to give a Federation total for each race, and then each Federation is placed in a league table in order of points. This will be updated after each of the 3 races, until the Champions are declared after the final race of the Amalgamation series. Only pigeons above 400ypm count. Only pigeons on the Amalgamation result count. There are only points for 50 pigeons in each race this season. Any additional rules will be added as required, if necessary, in the spirit of the event, as it develops, to improve it. This means Club/Federation rivals become Federation team-mates for this event – so...which is the best Federation in the Amalgamation?? The initial CESA Federation Championship league table after our first race from Grantham (Pentland Fed won this last year, with Fife in 2nd & Scottish Borders 3rd).
