Will definitely not be breeding youngsters to race next yearJohn b i have been scratching my head trying to figure out whats best John . trying to get a feeling from others what they plan for next season , or how to do it diffrently .
Simonmurray4747 Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 I started with 30 then by final yb race of season where I never got a feather home lost 13 out of 15,one came home 3 days later and the other I picked up in Blairgowrie. Been a hard one to take where they never put a foot wrong till that last race
JCN Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 Left with 28 from 40 after 10 races between federation and midweek club.Dropped 7 at the aforementioned wooler race.Haven't lost a single youngbird training which is a small miracle in present times. Training has been upto blackwood... roughly around 30 miles before racing started, then twice weekly from only 8 miles. Next two federation races will be very tough as convoy will be small... Half are now stopped
Kyleakin Lofts Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 i have been scratching my head trying to figure out whats best John . trying to get a feeling from others what they plan for next season , or how to do it diffrently . The BOP are governed by nature and will rear at the same time every year. We have to change. Breed early and organise any age races or YB races during June / July or breed late and race October / November, morning marking and short races. Don't make it easy for them to train their young how to kill.
Joe tyre Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 Started with 28 first young bird race lost 5 first race one 2nd race full returns both woolers sent 16 catterick this week lost 13 left with 9 but you iether chuck it or get on with it I only started back up from scratch last year with young birds and trying to build a team up so will just take a bit longer but I can't see the losses changing it will just get worse imo

philg50 Posted August 31, 2021 Report Posted August 31, 2021 Being sick of young bird losses over the years ie bad weather ,cancellations ,hold overs ,yb sitting in a transporter in humid thundery conditions the list goes on and on , didnt bother pairing early rung my first youngster mid to late April /May just fly them at home . I know i probably lose some next year but at least they will have a better chance IMO racing as old birds i will just wait and see .
andy Burgess Posted August 31, 2021 Author Report Posted August 31, 2021 i can understand your frustration Phil . feeling it right now. i may consider a plan like yours next year ? maybe?

I keep threatening to get them some trainers in October or November, but never seem to get around to it. I have also pushed them too hard when starting to race them, so intend to use a more "kid glove" approach next year.
Craig.G18 Posted August 31, 2021 Report Posted August 31, 2021 Started off with 35 lost 10 first toss, been steady with the other 25, lost 8 at the weekend from catterick and had 3 Sparrahawk attacks at the house tonight so that’s me finished

john cumming Posted September 5, 2021 Report Posted September 5, 2021 Started with 33 got 22 left ÷ 5 with injuries or to far n moult that Grandson started with 16, has 8 left ÷ 3 wìth injuries to far gone in moult Last race today , good returns hopefully
neila Posted October 11, 2021 Report Posted October 11, 2021 Bred 41 ended with 32 all had 3 races apart from 7 that had 1 race as I’m seeing if it matters that they only have one race as babies kept training on my 16 miles break point 3:4 times a week for 3 weeks after I stopped them As a I rule I send them to all but the last race or two but this year I wasn’t happy with the line the birds were on plus I kept reading of heavy losses so I played safe . It may be a mistake and I could have a team if thick pigeons that go down easily next year
bigbill Posted October 13, 2021 Report Posted October 13, 2021 started with 81 young birds, lost 15 of the shed, between training and 5 races, i have 54 left,
THE FIFER Posted October 13, 2021 Report Posted October 13, 2021 anymore on this subject would be interesting how young birds are doing those days

That's the best returns i 've heard by a large margin, well done. Myself, 23 left from 63 racing
