  2. Can anyone from the admin tell me why the Joe Murphy column is locked from replies? Is there any other member that has immunity over their comments?

It was agreed that these articles would be locked as on other sites they are read only

  3. The Joe Murphy Column

This week’s column is short as I have been struggling to find the time to sit down and compile an article. I had an appointment with my doctor as I have been having problems with my right shoulder and right foot. He thought I had gout in my foot which was unfounded but I must have stubbed my big toe and it has been giving me a hell of a pain. The problems from my shoulder are from a previous injury so I have been using Ibuprofen Gel for both these ailments. We are also helping our daughter out by watching her kids after school until she comes home from work after 6pm, so spare time is at a premium just now.

    Result

Last week’s article was away by the time this result came in.

St Andrews club held its final young bird race of the season with the Fife Federation race from Ripon, which was also their young bird open race. Dave Baldie once again won the 1st x 5 positions in the club with the Frans Zwols pigeons, and 1st, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th & 19th open federation from an entry of 626 pigeons. The winner is a blue cock on darkness and flown on the roundabout system, his sire is a late bred cock retained for stock from the original Frans Zwols stock pigeons and is a direct son of FRANZZ x TIP TOP 01,

Who is a direct daughter of Tip Top Junior x Francine. The dam is a direct daughter of the Tip Top Pair which has bred winners including 6th section 28th open SNFC Billericay; she is a full sister to Tip Top Witpen responsible for 10 x 1st federations. Tip Top 99 is the grand dam of Rose winner of 1st open SNFC Ypres, she is also a full sister to the dam of Fran-Tastic winner 3 x 1st federations and 2 x 1st section winner with the SNFC. Franz himself is now responsible for 7 x 1st federation winners, 13 x 1st joint 1st federation winners and 13 SNFC Diploma winners. Dave’s success story continued and from the SNFC YB national race form Buckingham he timed a young Frans Zwols cock now named ‘Frans Boy’ at 16-33pm on the winning day to win 1st section C 2nd open from an entry of 1833 birds, this young cock has previously won 2 x 2nd feds this year beaten by a granddaughter of Fran-Tastic on one occasion and by a pigeon we bred on the other, his brother was our timer from the young bird national last year known as ‘Young Frans’ who won 3rd section C 18th open, being a direct sons Fran-Tastic a winner 3 x 1st fed; 1st section C 7th open SNFC Buckingham; 1st section C, 21st open SNFC Billericay. What an end to the season with these incredible Frans Zwols pigeons winning in the last two seasons 25 x 1st clubs, 15 x 1st federations, they have now won 6 x 1st section C with the SNFC and the ultimate dream was realised this year when ‘Rose’ won 1st section C 1st open SNFC Ypres. Please see photo of the Ripon federation winner as well as one of Willie Donachie & Dave Baldie.

    Young Bird National

The Scottish National Flying Club held their last race of the season from Buckingham a distance of about 300 miles to the central belt of Scotland. 221 members sending 1833 birds on Thursday 14th September and these were not liberated until the following Monday at 08-30am. In 2015 they basketed the young birds on the Thursday and had a Friday race due to a bad forecast for the weekend. Therefore I (and many others) cannot believe that they did not carry out the same procedure this year. They could have basketed the birds on Sunday and had a Monday race with the youngsters only being in the baskets overnight. Everyone who studied the weather forecast knew we would not get a race over the weekend. Why did the race controllers not call for the race to be postponed until we had a better forecast and these young pigeons could have been kept in their lofts than sitting in a basket for 4 days? Even at this the losses from this race are again diabolical with many fanciers with a lot of empty perches. Of this convoy only ONE pigeon made 1100 velocity and was one of only 2 south section pigeons to record over 1000 ypm. The other 25 birds had 3 in section C (north of the Forth) 12 in section B (east of Scotland) and 10 in section D (central and west Lothian area) Congratulations to C K Hannah of Ecclefechan on winning 1st section A 1st open with his grizzle cock. Dave Baldie has an excellent pigeon in 2nd open and 1st section C position with A W Robertson of Edinburgh winning 1st section B 3rd open. Hamish Ferguson of Broxburn wins 1st section D 5th open. Big Derek Hay of Kirkintilloch wins 1st section F and 1st west region and 64th open flying 300 miles; Derek had 7 of the 8 pigeons timed in from this race into his section which had 92 pigeons entered; well done big man after winning your appeal to get back into your rightful section. 1st region E 74th open is Geordie Harris of Dunipace whom I wrote about last week as he is not in the best of health at the moment, hopefully this will give you a good boost Geordie. First section G 1st north region 129th open are Jim & Ann Donaldson of Peterhead flying 382 miles and timing in at 10-24 on the 2nd morning of the race. Only 121 birds from the entry of 1833 birds made it home on the day with the last open position of 184 doing a velocity of 610. As I write this article 4 days after the race quite a number of birds are still missing and this has put a dampener on the finish to the 2017 season. The biggest concern I have heard is the length of time the birds were in the baskets when it was proven in 2015 travelling down overnight and up the next day was a success. Okay in 2015 it was a south west wind and the birds were up at 09-45 am and the last open position of 258 was won at 15-20 hours so all over in just over 5 hours. This year it was a North West wind and after 4 days in the basket how could they expect youngsters to fly 300 plus miles on the day. Surely they could have brought them back up to Leicester to give them a fighting chance. If what I have been told is true that it was raining at Leicester so they decided to keep them and released them at Buckingham. These babies would then have to navigate their way past this weather to get back home to Scotland. If this is genuine there needs to be some changes made for next season or I can see a LOT of fanciers walking away from this once great club.

Angus & Kevin Orr of Brightons

I noticed in this week’s paper the above father and son partnership have done very well with their youngsters, winning 12th & 22nd open in the RPRA One Loft race winning £1559. Then in the above SNFC young bird national they won 2nd section D 6th open winning £1124 so a good weekend all round well done Angus & Kevin. I have included a photograph of them taken at the SHU awards last year.

    Good SNFC Birds

When I get time I will start to study the results and highlight these good birds however if you have a bird that has won a Gold; Silver or Bronze award during 2017. Then drop me an email with your birds details (and a photograph if you have one) and I will give your pigeon some publicity. It is surprising how many fanciers outside of Scotland who remark about this feature within my column. You all know your pigeon’s performance better than I do so feel free to drop me a line. This week I’m going to include a montage of John Thomson of Spay Bay in the North of Scotland. John’s Magnificent Seven all scored in last year’s young bird national flying 400 miles.

    Lost Bird

Received an email from William Wallace (not him from Braveheart) who writes; ‘Hi Joe I sent you letter regarding a pigeon gifted to me from my late fathers strain which has escaped from my new loft that I’ve just erected. I’m about to restart if application is accepted with Dumfries flying club. This pigeon is a blue white flight cock he is a 2015 late -bred wearing an old ring SU 04 F 4846. He is of great sentimental value to me. I hoped you could possibly ask in your column and see if any of your readers get him in. He has never been out the loft in his lifetime and my mother is giving me grief over this. I would appreciate any help keep up the good work I love your column yours William Wallace mobile number 07752689901.

  4. How do we back the You Forgot The Birds campaign?

Will investigate how we can help but this is a start.

For many the issues raised by You Forgot The Birds echo their own concerns. We are often asked about how to give to the campaign and so have set up a bank account to facilitate this:

You can contribute through the You Forgot The Birds account at Lloyds Bank:

    Sort Code 30 - 90 - 66

    Account 64710068

If you would like an acknowledgement or to discuss the issues raised in our campaign please email us ideas@youforgotthebirds.com

  5. One more point...stop deleting posts, a lot of it is banter, kill the banter, the forum dies, and right now its very quiet, if its off topic, so what? its someones view or banter, and lets face it, if you left this page to Aberdeen members, you would be lucky to get one post per week......the Lanarkshire halfwits keep this forum alive..........hope that's not off topic too? :emoticon-0127-lipssealed:

We know that Fred but if we get complaints we must act

Banter 9 times out of 10 just goes too far if you the members kept it in proportion it will not be removed but when you start bringing up about child abuse and sexual activities (especially between children and religeon or 2 males ) it is offensive to some and will not be tollerated

One person in particular is superb about football politics but he just pushes some too far and it gets removed so do the Mods a favour and THINK before you post and we will let things roll

    Ian

Ps I don't hide behind a non-deplume I am available to speak to anyone on site or by phone to resolve any issues if you are interested

    Thanks Guys

I have already asked this question to someone in the know

It will not happen as it is not within her domain to get involved with issues like this

As a pigeon fancier she is well aware of the problem and has been a victim herself (ie her loft and birds)

Please read the following article which is doing more good than we or our unions will ever do, my opinion is we, ALL unions included should be backing Mr Botham he is highlighting their failures more then any pigeon Club / Fed or Union has EVER done so get behind him and not just grump on this site

Get your letter to your union instructing them to back this attack on the RSPB and their failure to do as stated with money donated and gifted to them or milked from our government (which is us) and being used to line the pockets of a select few who without doubt have been proven to be very dubious with there decisions and actions under the RSPB banner

So do as Botham did pit yir teeth back in and join him as I see it he is doing more than ANYONE :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

£6m of donations spent on TV ads. £56m pledged to pension deficit. A mania for bird mangling turbines – why country-loving SIR IAN BOTHAM’s got a beef with... The Bird Brains

Sometimes in cricket you don’t see a ball coming. The RSPB’s top brass have been taken aback with the idea that anyone could criticise them. Word has it that they hope the You Forgot The Birds campaign that I have helped launch will disappear. They are in for a disappointment, because a wave of farmers, landowners and conservationists are joining. We are very different. But we all love birds with a passion and we all agree that the RSPB is a national treasure that is being badly mismanaged.

    Scandal 1

It has royally messed up its finances. For 125 years people have been leaving money to the RSPB in their wills. That’s helped it buy 200 nature reserves. Yet today’s RSPB leadership has wasted this legacy.

The RSPB’s pension deficit has become so out of control that last week it was forced to pledge £56million – that’s almost half of those nature reserves – as security to ensure pensions get paid. The generosity of generations is being treated with contempt.

It gets worse. Last year £5 million of donations which should have been going on bird welfare got diverted into paying down the pension deficit. That’s going to continue for the next 17 years. The RSPB is a pension fund with a charity attached.

    Scandal 2

Misleading marketing. The RSPB is so hungry for money that it has been gratuitously misleading donors. When potential donors have seen the promise on its home page to spend ‘90p in every pound’ on conservation they have assumed that it means 90p in every pound they give goes on conservation.

Not so. The Charity Commission website shows that only 68p has gone on these charitable purposes. Now, following discussions between You Forgot The Birds and the Charity Commission, the regulator has told the RSPB to ‘correct its statement’. The RSPB has been misleading donors and competing unfairly with other charities.

Of the 68p left for charitable purposes, only 24p went on its nature reserves – the bit where birds actually get looked after. The RSPB’s focus has instead been on its ever growing fundraising army. Your donations pay for its 405 fundraisers to ask you for more money so that they can employ more fundraisers to ask you for still more money.

Even the RSPB’s remaining friends are disturbed by its obsession with money. The editor of Birdwatch magazine was brave enough last month to suggest that £6 million spent on TV advertising would have been better devoted to nature reserves.

    Scandal 3

At least in its core activity of running its nature reserves the RSPB must be very good? Well, not if you ask the birds. Time and again Britain’s endangered birds give a thumbs down to hanging out at RSPB reserves. There’s a great farmer down in Kent called Philip Merricks. His land is lapwing heaven. They breed away merrily. Next door at the RSPB reserve it’s lapwing hell. For every 100 lapwing chicks that successfully fledge on the farmer’s land, the RSPB manages only eight.

Why does the RSPB fail in places like Kent? It’s simple. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds doesn’t do enough to protect birds.

Everyone in the countryside knows that ground nesting birds have no chance if their homes are shared with foxes and crows. These predators steal eggs and eat baby chicks. If you don’t protect birds from predators they don’t survive. That leads to:

    Scandal 4

The RSPB hides from us the predator control it does do. Have you ever received a mailshot from the RSPB telling you about the hundreds of foxes it shoots? Or the thousand deer? Didn’t think so. For some reason the marketing team avoid sending you images of Bambi’s mother after the RSPB had shot her dead. Nor do they want you to dwell on how your donations are being spent on bullets.

The RSPB’s ‘Vote for Bob’ marketing campaign features a cute looking red squirrel, but forgets to tell you that the way to save red squirrels is to kill grey squirrels.

Nature is full of hard choices, not cotton wool. If the RSPB really cared about wild birds it would campaign about our domestic cats which, to be blunt, butcher millions of birds every year.

But that would upset the donors. It would also be an inconvenient truth for it to say that our beloved songbirds cannot cope with the soaring numbers of birds of prey which wipe them out on our bird tables.

    :(

    Scandal 5

Just think that you are a migrating bird which has managed that long, long flight from Africa. Weary and tired, you encounter one of Britain’s thousands of bird mangling machines. Since wind farms are deadly to birds, you would expect the RSPB to be against them. Not in the slightest. Because much more important than protecting birds is protecting the planet from climate change.

So the RSPB enthusiastically backs its business partners (who must love the RSPB camouflage) to build ever more bird blenders in the sky. The end justifies the means. Now, climate change is important. The charities which do research on climate change and help us become more energy efficient have an important role.

But if you give to the RPSB you probably wish the money was going on looking after birds, not paying for blokes in suits to do political lobbying in Brussels.

    Scandal 6

There’s a reason why the RPSB puts so much effort into keeping its nominal membership above one million – so that it can intimidate politicians. And farmers. And everyone else who stands in the way of its world view. Am I making my case too strongly? No.

For the dirty little secret in Whitehall is that the environment department, Defra, and Natural England are scared of the RSPB. They do nothing without its permission. Policy sits on shelves for years because the RSPB doesn’t approve.

As a young Somerset batsman, Botham (above) once had a cricket ball knock out some of his teeth. He spat them out and played on until his team won. He hasn't changed

We will see it this week when the RSPB again blocks a scheme that would increase the number of hen harriers. The key reason the RSPB keeps obstructing this scheme is not because its donors are opposed – they overwhelmingly support it. It’s because the hen harrier is such a useful fundraising tool.

    Scandal 7

The mark of a dictatorship is that when they do elections they ensure that the number of candidates equals the number of jobs.

So guess what happened last weekend in the election for the RSPB’s governing council? Yes – three candidates for three jobs.

I have a dream that the RSPB will one day represent all who care passionately about bird life – not just a narrow clique.

So next year I will be offering some competition by putting together a list of reform-minded candidates to start cleaning out the mess created by the current leadership.

One final thought. Last week the RSPB threatened You Forgot The Birds with legal action.

Since the RSPB employs five law firms – with your donations – I await the legal letters.

But while politicians are intimidated, I am not.

As a young Somerset batsman, I once had a cricket ball knock out some of my teeth. I spat them out and played on until we won. I’ve not changed.

  8. The Joe Murphy Column

Kevin was telling me about his club mate Glen Cameron (Charlie’s son) who had one of his pigeons reported by a Polish lad Krzysztof working on a ship supplying oil rigs in the North Sea. Glen lost the pigeon from SNFC Ypres she was a yearling hen who had won a 1st prize during the season, and was his single entry into the race. Krzysztof wrote to Glen saying ‘Hi please find a few words about pigeons lost at sea. Very often on Sunday or even Saturday we have new ‘arrivals’. Usually one or two birds but could be as many as 20 or more. In first day I just give them water to drink many birds will drink and take off afterwards. Those really very tired stay overnight, those ones will get something to eat at evening. And again some of them will take off with sun rise and go home; I never try to capture birds in first day. Those one which stay longer need help, probably they will pass away if not fed. But the worst condition the pigeons what landed on deck Monday or even Thursday. I believe yours one I’ve found Monday afternoon. However they have chance to survive with a little help. This race season only one Dutch pigeon was found dead on board, it must have drunk dirty greasy water, and forehead was covered with oil. If the weather is not good sometime I keep them a little longer. Other birds have been better and liberated in Great Yarmouth. I have attached few photos. I have kept pigeons in past, my father still does, but because I am working at sea no time to keep birds now. So that is why if I have any arrivals on board I try to help. Best regards yours in sport Krzysztof. PS; your pigeon was liberated in Great Yarmouth. Glen’s pigeon made it back home single up from there, Krzysztof had placed a small tape on the rings with his email address and the initial coordinates of where the bird landed. I though it fascinating that he gets up to 20 birds at a time, I don’t know what routes Krzysztof works but it seems fairly long journeys as he does not feed on day one etc. I’ve included a couple of photographs of Krzysztof’s fathers loft in Poland as well as birds lost at sea! Plus one of my hen on her return and I’m lucky she landed on Krzysztof’s ship. Krzysztof went to a lot of bother to help look after the pigeon. As mentioned I am very happy you took the trouble to assist, it’s amazing the number of people who do. I assume you raced in Poland; is still a fairly strong sport in Poland. Indeed we have a new member in our club this year is from Poland, we have tried to assist but he has no real background in the sport so it’s difficult for us to help him, although we did get him some well-bred pigeons. Please let me know if we can ever assist you with pigeons in the future, kindest regards Glen Cameron’.

I was very saddened that the SHU did not inform me of the passing of one of their past presidents. I looked on the SHU web site to see if this information was correct but there was nothing on the site which was very disappointing.

Club Winners Forfar 245 bird’s winner Macaulay Ferguson & Curran; Montrose 60 bird’s winner M Wallace; Gourdon 28 bird’s winner Eddie Mann; Inchcape 23 bird’s winner Gordon McKenzie

Ayrshire Federation race report from Archie McIntyre who informs me this was their 6th and final young bird race of the season held on the 2nd September with a convoy of 313 birds. The Federation was due to race from Ripon this week for their final race approximately 177 miles to the top end of the fed but the top table took the decision early in the week based on the small convoy of birds (304) at the previous week’s race from Sedgefield and the returns from Sedgefield (less than a third) to change the race to Arniston. Jim O’Hare had the birds up and away at 07:45 into no wind for a race of between 52 miles up to 71 miles to the top end of the fed. Reports from the liberation site were the small convoy headed off straight away and this looks like the case as the velocity’s this week have been by far the best from all the young bird races this season. Leading the way in the federation this week to record their 4th x 1st fed win in 6 young bird races making it 3 x 1st in a row is the partnership of John Grant & Stevie McGovern from the Ardeer HS. What more can you say about these lads with their young bird team this season apart from another outstanding performance. This partnership cannot seem to do anything wrong this young bird season delivering another stunning result winning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th fed from a convoy of 313 birds with their leading pigeon doing 1227.9 ypm, timing their 7 pigeons in 19 seconds. John and Stevie’s winning pigeon this week to take 1st fed is a black cock that also recorded 2nd fed the previous week only to be beaten by his loft mate on the trap. This bird certainly looks like one for the future, but after talking to John he is thinking about sending it on to the young bird national in a week’s time. The sire is a gift bird they got about 4 years ago as a young bird from Mark Findlay who now flies under the name of Cowan & Findlay. The dam is a Koopman pigeon bred down from their Galaxy Loft birds. 2nd fed on 1227.7 is a gift bird John & Stevie received from their very good friend Dougie Bald who is no stranger to when it comes to topping the Almond Valley Federation. The sire and dam are pigeons from Willie Hay of Methil and have bred numerous federation winners for Dougie. 3rd fed this week on 1226.9 is a Koopman pigeon bred down from the partnerships Galaxy loft stock pigeons. A lot of the Ayrshire members will be glad this is the last race (well except Grant & McGovern) as this has been a bruising young bird season with many losses. Every race apart from the last has seen the youngsters having to face these fresh westerly winds and this has certainly taken its toll on the natural youngsters, even the darkness youngsters have also been finding it hard.

Almond Valley Federation news from Lynne who writes ‘We were at Wetherby on Saturday 9th September with 311 birds liberated at 09:00 hours and taking the first 2 places in the federation is Jimmy Young of East Calder club he is also 7th & 8th open. Ian Jamieson of Balerno is 3rd 6th & 9th & 10th with J Burnside winning 4th 5th 11th 12th 13th 14th & 16th open’.

East of Scotland Federation news from John Baillie who writes; ‘From our young bird open race from Newark the birds were liberated at 09-30 into a light west wind. Taking the top spot this week we have Mr & Mrs March of Prestonpans. Tom & Scott McEwen of Elphinstone take 2nd, 3rd, 7th & 10th open positions. In 4th open is Jim McNeil of Tranent, with John Bird of Prestonpans in 5th & 8th positions. Tam Hunnam of Port Seton fills in the 6th & 9th open positions.

Prestonpans HC. Winning the club this week are Mr & Mrs March with a dark pied cock, bred from a brother and sister mating from birds bred from Gus Simpson of Lauder. The mother has a few fed tickets and flew Ypres this year. The young bird taking 2nd position for Tom & Scott McEwen is 100% Paul Stobbs with the sire a direct son from the Gypsy when he was paired to his dam and the dam of the youngster is inbred to Bob's Choice. In 3rd position is Tom and Scott again with its sire being a Deweerdt from Mark Gilbert from the Ted and Magnus lines and the dam is Tom's old family of Petite Rose his 1st open SNFC Tours winner, when she was paired to her full brother. Returns were very good considering the amount of rain that was forecasted, we seem to get better racing these days in similar weather conditions? Seas like our friendly Hawks hate getting wet!!

John Bird wins the Pentland Midweek Race from Peterborough, so well done to John, yours in sport John B’. Last week I stated I thought that Tom & Scott McEwen winning the above federation for the 3rd time was the first time this had been done. However I have been informed that Brian Cunningham won 4 times when it was the ‘Big Fed’, sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

He is now responsible for 6 x 1st federation winners; 13 x joint 1st federation winners and 13 SNFC Diploma winners. A grandson won 13th UK, 150th open International final Golden Race in the Algarve from 3644 entries flying 505 km. Taking the last club red card for this season is Walker & David Kennedy Loft No2 with a velocity of 1005 ypm. We timed a darkness hen who won 3rd club Ripon last week. THANK YOU to Press Officers

May I once again THANK all the fanciers who send in their weekly club or federation results to add to the column? I know this is a hard job as some people have no difficulty telling you the information on their winning pigeons. While others do not wish to give you any particulars which are their preference however without these press officers supplying this weekly information many fanciers and clubs would not receive any publicity. Once again my many thanks to each and every one of you Joe M:

    Sick Call

George Harris of Dunipace has taken a stoke and thankfully is now out of hospital it will take him a while to adjust. George was 3rd open SNFC when I won the race from Sartilly and he has put up some outstanding performances over the years. This year he has won more than his share in the Forth & Clyde club which is associated to Almond Valley federation. We wish you all the best George and you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

  9. The Joe Murphy Column

In a recent conversation with my old friend John Tyreman, President of the BICC, he informed me that they have a transporter for sale at a reasonable price and wondered if I knew of anyone who may be interested. On receiving the details and photographs I thought it might be suitable for the SNFC and forwarded this information onto the secretary to give them first chance of purchasing it on 1ST September and up to now 13th I have had no communication from the SNFC. The lorry is a HGV, holds 96 crates per side where the BICC have used it with 16 birds per crate so it will hold 3, 072 birds. John is very complementary of the lorry and informed me that it is MOT’d and has been serviced every year since purchased and was used only for our 5 or 6 races per season. The transporter was used in 2017 to the Poitiers race. The kilometres reading on the dashboard is 387086 which is a lot less than the present BICC Lorry which has over 500.000. I am told it does around 15/16 to the gallon and you will see there is a sleeper cab. However, the only thing I am told is the Turbo requires attention (it’s attached with wire and needs putting back properly). I have included some photos of the vehicle and photo of the crates store on the identical lorry that the BICC are keeping. The BICC have ordered aluminium crates for their lorry for the 2018 season but this lorry would come with ALL the wooden crates. You will see from my photograph that there is a space down each side so that the birds can get to the water or feeding which is on BOTH SIDES. So the pigeons are only 12 inches from food or water at any time they are in the crates. You will also see from the photographs that ventilation gets throughout the lorry and the air flow is excellent. This also helps with the intake of light into the birds in the crates. If the SNFC are not interested in this transporter and any other organisation are then please contact me and I will give you the person name and phone number who is dealing on behalf of the BICC.

    MNFC Poitiers

While reading the report on the Midland National FC race from Poitiers which Mr. & Mrs. Fisher & son won with their blue cock Young Stormer. My good mate Rob Glover from Earl Shilton was 2nd open beaten by point 8 of a yard with a blue hen that I bred for him. This wonderful hen has won 31st section 121st open MNFC Bordeaux 531 miles; 53rd open MNFC Ancenis 535 miles from an entry of 4500 birds; 5th section 52nd open MNFC Bordeaux; 39th section 251st open MNFC Ancenis 4331 birds and now winning 1st section 2nd open MNFC Poitiers with 285 members sending 984 birds. I think you will agree she is a very special pigeon and Rob has told me that her sister is in his stock loft. The blue hen now known as The Murphy Hen is a half-sister to My Little Rachel winner of 4th open SNFC Alencon for Kevin and not 1st open as Mike Lakin stated in his report. Rachel brother is the sire of Kevin’s 26th open SNFC Falaise 2017 winner. The sire of these 3 pigeon’s is a direct son of Gilmour Brothers of Leven 1st open SNFC Falaise winner ‘Robbie’s Boy’ (who has just died at the age of 15 years old) when Robbie’s Boy was mated to a sister of ‘Mary’ the famous hen raced by Jock King of Kirkcaldy. Mary won 11 times from France winning a Gold Award in both the SNFC and the SNRPC. The dam of The Murphy Hen was a direct daughter of ‘Kingdom Spirit’ bred and raced by George & Brian Hunter of Dunfermline. This pigeon is only the 2nd bird in the history of the SNFC to win a Double Gold Award 10 times a winner from France into Scotland. The other pigeon to do so was the famous ‘Fortune Lady’ raced by Mr. & Mrs. Jimmy Smith of Elphinstone. As a matter of interest the parents of The Murphy Hen are bred a cock that I entered into the Barcelona Challenge Loft in France managed by John McGee. This cock was 9th bird from Narbonne flying 502 miles and was also 15 bird home from the Barcelona international race in 2013. I once again send my congratulations to Rob Glover on his 2nd open MNFC success well done mate.

    Ayrshire Federation

Archie informs us they were at Sedgefield for their 5th young bird race of the season on the 26th August with a convoy of 304 birds, a drop of 536 birds on the previous week race and a staggering 1,037 of a drop over the last two races. The Ayrshire young birds have certainly not had it easy throughout this young bird season, having to face these fresh westerly winds every week as they head across the UK to the west coast. Jim O’Hare our race controller had the birds up and away at 09:30 into a light south west wind for a race of between 128 miles up to 156 miles to the top end of the federation. Reports from the liberation site were that the small convoy headed off straight away unlike the previous weeks race where they kept returning to the liberation site for some unknown reason. Returns this week do not look to be much better than in the previous races. In the top 2 clubs in the North Section this week, Dalry only had 30 members sending 67 birds and Ardeer had 30 members sending 80 birds. At the clocks and these 2 clubs seem to have the better of the returns. Some individual members in other clubs are only reporting 4 out of 20, 0 from 4 and 1 from 4 home at clock checking. Leading the way in the federation this week to record their 3 x 1st federation win in 5 young bird races is the partnership of John Grant & Stevie McGovern from the Ardeer HS. This partnership cannot seem to do anything wrong this young bird season winning 1st, 2nd , 5th , 15th , 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th open fed from a convoy of 304 birds with their leading pigeon doing 1087.5 ypm. John and Stevie’s winning pigeon this week is a chequer hen the partnership purchased as a team of 6 from the top winning lofts of McCauley, Ferguson and Curran of Forfar. The 6 young birds John and Stevie purchased have been flying very steady with at least one of them always in the leading birds to their loft. The winning bird this week is down off a John Ellis bird when paired to a Soontjen hen. 2nd fed on 1087.2 for the partnership is a black cock, this bird has been flying very steady and has had every race. The sire is a gift bird they got about 4 years ago as a young bird from Mark Findlay who now flies under the name of Cowan & Findlay. The dam is a Koopman pigeon bred down from their Galaxy Loft birds. 3rd fed this week are the furthest flying members in the federation, Robin & George McCallum of Largs. This partnership work hard with their birds and away get a turn with them. Having taken a stroke last year, Robin has found it very challenging and sometimes impossible just to do the things we take for granted like catching the birds and cleaning out the loft. With the help of friends to basket the birds for training and racing (When George the partner goes a missing in action) Robin continues to enjoy the sport and get the best out of their birds. Robin & George’s winning bird is one of a kit of 6 youngsters the partnership received from Paul Reed of Barnwood in Gloucester. Robin met Paul at the Blackpool show this year and after a few pints they agreed to do a swap of 6 youngster’s each. Paul himself has had some time recently in the hospital and has been unable to race the youngsters he received from Robin and George. The only details I have of the partnership’s winning pigeon are the parents both contain Janssen blood lines. The partnership youngsters are all natural and are flying to the perch. Robin would like to wish Paul a speedy recovery and hopes to catch up with him at the 2018 Blackpool show.

    Subject: News from Westminster

There will be NO nativity scene at Westminster this year 2017. As the Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a nativity scene in the nation's House of Commons this Christmas season. This isn't for any religious reason - they simply have not been able to find three wise men in there.

The search for a Virgin continues....

However, there was no problem finding enough donkeys to fill the stable.

  10. Am not saying you are either wrong or right with figures, as club secretary, but I have got to say you are WRONG saying a small team flyer.

Get the figures correct before making any statement, spoken to Kevin, he has said he flys a large team, and am sure its not a small team as you say in your post.

You are correct in the past but not this year (I did state 2017)or I would would not have made that statement
