Thanks for the advice Pigeonmaster , I shipped back 4 of them, They were pecking the feathers off the heads of the other birds. After seeing this happen over and over again I could not allow it to continue. Two of the hens were almost completely bald on top of their heads. The breeder made a joke and said they are tring to make the eggs pop out by wacking in their heads, this made me very upset. I felt sorry for the poor hens. I hope the feathers grow back soon . I never seen something so cruel happen between pigeons. I did not like the fact he slipped me extra pigeons since I have only so much room, I keeping it at one Pigeon for every 2 square Feet. Sorry if I made a angry statement in the beginning of this post, I was so upset that day ,and the breeder did not want them back. Anyway he got 4 of them weather he likes it or not. I am sure I will never have birds pecking in the heads of other birds for no reason, they must have been mean Pigeons or something wrong in their breeding.

My new Pigeon has a dilated Pupil in one eye. The other one is fine. What can I do about it ? The eye is completely black on one side and the other side is fine,I just picked up 4 pigeons from a friend last night and just noticed it this morning. I hope this is not a contagious disease, I have all 4 in an isolation cage for 14 days before I let them in to the general fly pen just incase one is sick. I do not want the rest to get sick. I never had this happen before. Thanks Jason

Thanks for the info, I ask several people about this and I attended a club meeting . One person told me if I were to open up a 4 foot by 4 foot section of my flight pen that the pigeon would have no problem getting in or out, I would only attemp this late in the afternoon and the Pigeons would return before dark, providing I did not stay to close to the pen. I need to close it up by nite fall.I do not want other kritters getting in to the cage. I will think it over , thanks for all the info you guys provided me. I just don't want to loose them ,plus I am afraid the neighbors will get upset if they hang out on their roof tops, thats the trouble my father had when he use to let them loose many yrs ago. Zoning is strick here not to mention the State bought Pigeon Hawks to control the pigeon population, these birds probably wont fly that fast until flying a few times. The Halks have already Bird eyed my Flight pen the second day the Pigeons arrived. So I best to only let them out in late afternoon, I never see them Hawks late in the afternoon. I ask this question again to the group, to see if a large 4 feet by 4 feet opening is ok thanks again Jason ps just want to be sure before they get their first flight

Letting your Pigeons Fly for the first time. I have 4 Roller Pigeons for 2 weeks. I like to let them fly and I asked several People on how to go about letting them fly. Some say I should trap train them and some say if I have a lage opening say a 4 foot by 4 foot opening theycan easily get back into the fly pen I will not have to Trap train them. I will not feed them the day they fly,I like to let them loose late in the afternoon, I am almost certain they will want to come back in to their sleeping area. I also use a whistle each time I feed them and will use it if they do not return. Has anyone ever had any problems with just opening up a 4 Foot by 4 Foot section of the fly pen just to let them in and out providing you close it up at night so kritters won't get it. I better fly them soon ,I am afraid they won't fly as they get older. Thanks Jason

I found a Good Breeder, Finally , I had a bad experience with one Breeder a couple weeks ago, this time I will see the Pigeons before buying them .I order 4 of them from a local Breeder , he said he give me a few extra, well when the package arrived ,he stuffed it with 21 Pigeons !!! I taken care of them for 2 weeks, I finally got him to take the birds back,I am keeping 4 of them, that was the deal.He told me I will loose a few each time I fly them and that I am better off with as many as I can get. Out of the 21 pigeon I had a few bad ones. I guess I jumped in too fast. A hard lesson to learn. I got a Pigeon Fair comming up in September and hope to find some there. Thanks Jason

I am just starting off with pigeons, I was told to keep the dropping away from the pigeons, I made a screan floor ,I choose the mesh that was a half inch by half inch,I did not want to hurt the pigeons feet. My father had pigeons back in 1966 and raised them for years. He told me to make a flypen that you can easily clean. I took a drain pipe and sliced it open from end to end and connected two elbows up and water proof the entire cleaning area. The waste will new end up going down the drain pipe. I want to keep the fly pen clean and I power wash it daily with a pressure washer,It only take 2 minutes to remove everything, it all goes down the drain.I just wanted a cage that would not take up all my time cleaning. Here is a picture of the fly pen.

Sorry if I offended anyone,The breeder agree to take them back today,I will be shipping them back in the origional create. I will be going to some show in Connecticut this Septmeber were I can pick out me own. The was a important learning experience for me , I am new at this hobbie, sometimes its best not to rush into buying birds unless you know the Breeder and see the birds first hand. Thanks Jason

I started out with the wrong breed Pigeons, they are 1 year old, I am getting rid of them because they are Black, I hate the color black and want some better Pigeons. I rushed into getting birds. They are in great shape. I am looking for some White or Yellow birds, I will be willing to even trade. I may have to dump these at the local park, but will try to find anyone that wants them here first, I have 21 Black Roller Pigeons here, if they were white I would keep them,I just hate Black! They were from a Roller Breeder in Connecticut, when they arrived I thought they be mixed colors, but most all are blaxk with white tiped wings. I feel black birds are more aggressive and mean than light color birds. I will be letting them loose on Saturday if no one wants them Thanks Jason

Will a Vaccinated Pigeon effect others Pigeons that have not recieved the same Vaccine ? Someone was selling me a pair of birds but refused too,he asked me if my birds had any shots. I told them they were only dewormed,he ws afraid his birds could of effected all of mine. I am a bit upset, I do not think it would have any effect on my birds. I am going to try to buy some today.I live in Connecticut ,I need to find a new breeder so I can buy some, its hard to come across breeders in Connecticut. Thanks Jason

hi i just got a new kit of roller birds. here is the problem. they are about one and a half years old. they have never been held or trained to fly before. since i am new to this it's going to be hard for me to show old birds new tricks. lately i have been going into the pen at night and taking one bird at a time out and holding them. they are real nervous. but i think after a few weeks of it they will be ok. they have been with me for about 2 weeks now they have a very nice home big flying pen and eat good pugrain pigeon food with grit and game starter feed. can someone please help me teach the birds how to come back into the loft after me letting them out to fly. i don't do this for sport or competition but more for fun so i don't care if they sit on the tree branches or anything i just want them to have a good fun life. they have been loft there whole life and i want them to fly outside everyday and come back home. any help or tips would be helpful and apresheated thanks Jason

I have been given some older Roller Pigeons about1-2 years old. They never been handled. After reading one of the post here I decided to pick one up during the nite , I carefully lifted one up at my suprise he just slightly resisted being picked up.I was sure to have the tips of my fingers just above his wing so he would not try to wiggle away. I will try each nite to hold him for a minute. Do you think an older bird will get use to being handled ? Thanks Jason

How can you tell genuine Roller pigeons ?Here are some pictures of some Roller Pigeons given to my by a breeder. Can you tell just by looking at these photos if they are genuine Rollers. I will try flying then in a couple weeks. Thanks Jason

Thanks barlbylofts for the info. I cannot find any info on how to build a Hawk trap ,if the hawks keep scaring the daylights out of my birds I will have to try making one. The birds the breader gave me are Rollers Pigeons, I will try letting them fly once I can get rid of the Hawks . Thanks Jason

I am new to pigeons, always wanted to have my own coop, I finally put one together after working on it for a couple weeks.A Local Breeder gave me 21 young Roller Pigeon to help start me out. I found out the first day I placed the pigeons in the coop that I have a Hawk problem. By the second day one dived within 10 feet of the top of the cage with me standing there in plain view, all the pigeons flew inside all at once ,I looked up and saw these two huge claws with long legs.I am sure sure what kind it was but it was brown red ,looked like a camaflouge jet. It been one week since I started out and for the past 5 days I can see a pair gliding in a circle High up in the ski. I want to fly my pigeons, I never thought Hawks would be a problem, I live in Connecticut ,does anyone know what I can do to rid my Hawk problem ? I just joined this Message forum today and will attend a Local pigeon club meeting next week. Thanks Jason
