  1. Maybe they should put a Racing Pigeon Channel on. ;D ;D ;D ;D
  2. Depends if your floating the eggs to other pairs if so I would let them lay 5 times, float the eggs and then let the pair raise the final round to keep them interested. But if they are rearing their own young no more than 3 rounds.
  3. Think all this has got a bit stupid now, First of all any Police Officer can stop and check any vehicle at anytime under the Road Traffic Act 1988. Secondly if you are driving a vehicle with a defect, ie light out, expect to be stopped you are commiting an offence and yes the Police have, different roles, Road Traffic deal with traffic matters, CID deal with serious crime, Response Officers deal with 999 calls etc, see where I'm coming from!!! So by saying havn't they got anything better to do is a waste of breath, Many vehicles are on the road uninsured or been driven by band drivers, I pay my Insurance and have a valid driving licence, so why should these people be allowed to get away with it, stop checks by the Police helps take these kind of people and vehicles off the road and also detects criminals using vehicle to commit crime. Another view is if your pigeons got stolen, who would you report it to. If your car got pinched would you report it to, if your child went missing, who would you report it to, if you house got broke into, who would you report it to, Yes the Police. I bet if your valubles and person/s responsible were found in a vehicle that had been stop checked would people still have the attitude that we have seen on this thread, me thinks not. If you get stopped by the Police and give attitude their behaviour might reflect yours. I very much doubt if anyone would be prosecuted for carrying a dog or pigeons safely in a vehicle or any insurance company would void your insurance for these things. So people please get off your high horse and look at things from different viewpoints.
  4. A lot of different baits will work on the traps, but please remember as I've explained earlier, use the same foodstuff on the trap as what you have been pre baiting the area with. Rat glue is also good to use but anything that makes contact with the glue will stick and this includes your Pigeons, try to seperate a Pigeon from Rat glue and the bird will look and feel like it's done 10 rounds with a Peregrine. Also once a Rat has been caught in the glue it needs to be killed by some method. All traps that are capable of trapping Rats alive require checking at least twice a day by law, fall foul of this and the RSPCA will come down on you like a ton of bricks, regardless that Rats are vermin. The RSPCA have prosecuted many times, people guilty of these offences and will continue to do so. Rats are vermin but also living creatures that need to be killed humanely and are afforded protection by law. Another post I've noticed is advice to leave a dead Rat next to the trap, decaying Rats stink to high heaven for a long time, attract flies and foxes from miles around, and are more likely to prevent other Rats approaching the trap due to the fact that Rats are intelligent and born surviour's and natural instinct will tell them that the trap is contected with the dead one. Keep it simple, Pre bait the area 4-5 days, set the trap, remove and dispose of dead bodies and re set the trap, remember to where gloves and where you stand lawfully. This is the method I've succesfully used in many years of professional pest control work and I've tried all the different methods and tactics. 5. No problem, I like to help those who deserve it, if I lived closer than a couple of hundred miles away I would nip round with my trusty ferrets and Ratus catching kit and help sort the problem out, give me a nudge if you need any more info, all the best for the rest of the season. Best regards Tack.

  7. Rats Rats Rats aaargghh horrible little creatures that make a formidable enemy. Firstly they are very crafty animals, very versitile, breed like mad and can adapt to new surroundings very easily. I have hunted rats for many years, professionally and wierdly for pleasure. A few tips to help any battle, concerning rats. Rats suffer fron NEW OBJECT REACTION which is any new object that is placed in their territory they will avoid for days until the new object is accepted, unlike mice that will automatically explore a new object. A major part of the rat population are immune to the majority of legal poisons, so by placing commercial poisons down you will be actually given them a welcome food source. Shooting is time consuming, waiting around for only a small amount of kills. Ferrets work well if the rat burrow system can be located, although a doe rat in young will put a hell of a fight and many a time win the fight against the ferret. Terriers etc are also good, love catching rats but need to catch the rat to kill it, more easily said than done, when rats smell dogs and humans they will hide and require flushing out, again time consuming, requires experienced dogs and handlers and this method requires continual bombardment on a regular basis to prove affective. The best method of rat control is by traps, they work 24hr 7 days a week and dont require feeding. First tip, pre bait an area to attract rats to one spot over a period of 4 - 5 days by placing corn etc in the area where rats are present, this helps combat new object reaction. Secondly wear gloves when handling traps, to prevent disease and human smell, rub the traps in the dirt around the trapping area and leave them in situ, unset whilst pre baiting, this helps remove the 'new smell' and 'human scent' helping to 'weather' the trap. Thirdly after five days of pre baiting the area set and bait the trap, whilst wearing gloves, with a juicy morsel, chocolate or peanuts are good for this. All that is left to do is check the trap/s on a regular basis, remove the dead bodies and bury or burn them. This method I've described is intended for the Break Back Spring Traps, commonly known as 'Little Nipper' Safety points, please be careful when setting these types of traps, the spring are very strong and can snap a human finger. Also please remember that when baited the trap will attract not only rats but other non target wildlife including pigeons, place the traps undercover and out of sight to prevent any accidents, ensure that the trap cover is tall enough to allow the trap to work without blocking the mecanism, also treat the new trap cover as you would the trap itself by covering in dirt and leaving to 'weather' to prevent unwanted scents. All the best, fight the Rat and win the battle.
