Rats Rats Rats aaargghh horrible little creatures that make a formidable enemy. Firstly they are very crafty animals, very versitile, breed like mad and can adapt to new surroundings very easily. I have hunted rats for many years, professionally and wierdly for pleasure. A few tips to help any battle, concerning rats. Rats suffer fron NEW OBJECT REACTION which is any new object that is placed in their territory they will avoid for days until the new object is accepted, unlike mice that will automatically explore a new object. A major part of the rat population are immune to the majority of legal poisons, so by placing commercial poisons down you will be actually given them a welcome food source. Shooting is time consuming, waiting around for only a small amount of kills. Ferrets work well if the rat burrow system can be located, although a doe rat in young will put a hell of a fight and many a time win the fight against the ferret. Terriers etc are also good, love catching rats but need to catch the rat to kill it, more easily said than done, when rats smell dogs and humans they will hide and require flushing out, again time consuming, requires experienced dogs and handlers and this method requires continual bombardment on a regular basis to prove affective. The best method of rat control is by traps, they work 24hr 7 days a week and dont require feeding. First tip, pre bait an area to attract rats to one spot over a period of 4 - 5 days by placing corn etc in the area where rats are present, this helps combat new object reaction. Secondly wear gloves when handling traps, to prevent disease and human smell, rub the traps in the dirt around the trapping area and leave them in situ, unset whilst pre baiting, this helps remove the 'new smell' and 'human scent' helping to 'weather' the trap. Thirdly after five days of pre baiting the area set and bait the trap, whilst wearing gloves, with a juicy morsel, chocolate or peanuts are good for this. All that is left to do is check the trap/s on a regular basis, remove the dead bodies and bury or burn them. This method I've described is intended for the Break Back Spring Traps, commonly known as 'Little Nipper' Safety points, please be careful when setting these types of traps, the spring are very strong and can snap a human finger. Also please remember that when baited the trap will attract not only rats but other non target wildlife including pigeons, place the traps undercover and out of sight to prevent any accidents, ensure that the trap cover is tall enough to allow the trap to work without blocking the mecanism, also treat the new trap cover as you would the trap itself by covering in dirt and leaving to 'weather' to prevent unwanted scents. All the best, fight the Rat and win the battle.
