A parade of 2,500 military personnel, veterans and cadets has marched down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh to mark UK Armed Forces Day. The celebrations were attended by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, as well as Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond. Thousands of people have turned out at events across the Armed Forces Day official host city. Street parties and parades are also taking place throughout the UK. Events in Edinburgh got under way on Friday, with tours of HMS Portland, which is moored in Leith, and an aerial display by the Red Arrows. Charles and Camilla, known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when they are in Scotland, were watching the main parade from the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade to Holyrood Park. It ended with a short ceremony of thanks, where the royal couple met veterans and service personnel. The parade was being followed by an afternoon of entertainment and end with a Beating Retreat and a Typhoon and Tornado flypast from RAF Leuchars and RAF Lossiemouth. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/53686000/jpg/_53686343_hi012297431.jpgEvents in the city began on Friday and included a Red Arrows flypastThe Red Arrows display over the Firth of Forth on Friday was their first full performance in the city for 23 years. Squadron Leader Ben Murphy said being involved in Armed Forces Day was "massively important". He said: "Most of us have come from operational backgrounds, having served in Afghanistan and Iraq and other theatres. "For us to be able to come up here and participate in these types of events is a massive honour." Defence Secretary Liam Fox said: "Armed Forces Day provides a unique opportunity for us all to pay thanks to the men and women who serve this country with such distinction. "I would especially like to thank the City of Edinburgh for hosting this national event. "The city has a long and proud military history, and provides the perfect setting for us all to say thank you to our Armed Forces."

Rovers step up Cisse bid Blackburn look to win race for Senegalese ace http://img.skysports.com/11/05/660x350/PapissDembaCisse_2592044.jpg Blackburn Rovers have stepped up their interest in Papiss Cisse by making a fresh bid for the striker, skysports.comunderstands. The Senegalese forward had a sensational season in Germany last year, finishing as second top scorer in the Bundesliga. The 26-year-old is understood to have been in England this week to hold talks with Rovers as Freiburg accept their star man is set to leave. But the German club insist that they will not accept anything less than €15million for him. Rovers lodged a bid back in May, but that is believed to have been half of what Freiburg wanted, now Steve Kean has returned and upped his offer which, if accepted, would break the club's transfer record

Father And Son Held Over 'Burglar' Stab Death A father and son are being questioned on suspicion of murder after an alleged burglar who tried to break into their home was stabbed to death. http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2011/Jun/Week4/16017434.jpg Greater Manchester Police said John Bennell, 27, from Hyde, died from a stab wound to the chest. Peter Flanagan, 59, and his son, Neil, 27, are being held by police after four men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas tried to break into the house in Ethel Avenue, Salford. A woman, 21, who made a frantic 999 call for police to come to the property around midnight on Wednesday, is also being held on suspicion of murder. The victim was stabbed at least once, police said, after a "disturbance" in the terraced house and was then apparently carried away by accomplices as they fled. http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2011/Jun/Week4/16017481.jpgOfficers at the scene in Ethel Avenue, Salford A second call alerted officers to the victim a short distance from the property and he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim has yet to be formally identified. Police have made an appeal to the public to try to trace his three accomplices. The incident comes after the Prime Minister David Cameron promised stronger support for people protecting their property from burglars. Two days ago Mr Cameron vowed to bring in stronger measures to protect homeowners defending their property. "We will put beyond doubt that homeowners and small shopkeepers who use reasonable force to defend themselves or their properties will not be prosecuted," the PM said.

Pigeons 'home in on friendly human feeders Pigeons quickly learn the difference between friendly feeder and hostile foe Related Stories Are pigeons beautiful birds or vermin?'Wildlife to work' survey beginsUrban pigeons have the ability to learn the difference between people who will feed them and those who will chase them away, a French study has indicated. Researchers suggested that this allowed birds to limit the time spent searching for food, and maximise the time eating. The team said the study provided the first experimental evidence of feral pigeons using the ability to maximise benefits provided by urban areas. "Considered as a plague in many cities, pigeons in urban areas live close to human activities and exploit this proximity to find food - which is often delivered by people," the team of French scientists wrote. Urban feral pigeons are direct descendants from wild rock doves/pigeons (Columbia livia), which are distinguished by two black bars on their wings. However feral pigeons vary in colour and patterns. Friendly food The birds are widespread. For example, Europe's population is estimated to be up to 28 million, with high densities in the centre of major towns and cities. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/53556000/jpg/_53556566_pigeon_bag.jpgPigeons are not a species to miss out on a free lunchIt is considered that the birds' success in urban areas is a result of low levels of predation, and the year-round availability of food and breeding sites. The researchers decided to conduct a series of experiments to explore the pigeons' ability to exploit the "human-based food resource", while avoiding people who were hostile and viewed the creatures as "flying rats". They suggested that feral pigeons within urban environments probably used their "memory and categorisation abilities in their daily foraging activities". "The ability to rapidly detect a human feeder could be an important factor in decreasing the total time spent foraging and increasing the rate of food ingestion," they said. The team explained that two tests were carried out in an urban park, with two feeders - one neutral and one hostile. The hostile feeder would chase the birds away. "In both experiments, the [feral] pigeons learned quickly to discriminate between the feeders," they observed. "The pigeons avoided the hostile feeder even when the two feeders exchanged their coats, suggesting that [the birds] used stable individual characteristics to differentiate between the experimenter feeders. "Thus, pigeons are able to learn quickly from their interactions from human feeders and use knowledge to maximise the profitability of the urban environment." The researchers from scientific institutions across Paris said that the study provided the "first
