Longstone Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Hi folks, I am pretty new to the bird scene, I had 12 horseman until my hut was broken into and I am not sure what to do now should I keep with the horseman or go with the racing pigeons. I dont have a lot of cash to spend so just wanting your advice. cheers
pjc Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 It is all down to pesonal preference, you will get as much enjoyment out of any breed you keep. Phil
Longstone Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 I am more of a learner and just want to know racers need more attention or looking after than horseman.
OLDYELLOW Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 you just look at fancy pigeons , racing pigeons require more time i.e training waiting from races ectra, hope you get sorted are you wanting fancy birds or Racing pigeons?
pjc Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Even if you go with fancy birds do you want them to free fly or just to be looked at as there are so many different types and breeds
gangster Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 problem as i see it is with the horseman were you are is there are plenty of lowlifes willing to steal or even burn your doo kit down just to stop you flying them.......maybe a go at racing theres plenty willing to help and less hassle
Longstone Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 I love flying them and I don't want to stop flying them. When I was flying I only let a couple out at a time and they went away and cam back an hour or so later. Can you have racing and horseman or is that not good.
Ronnie Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 from my own experiance theres nothing like entering your own bird in a race and watching it come home from a race even if your last man which i have been numerous times. Its even better when its one you have bred yourself and even better when its one you bred yourself and it comes from the channel race.
Longstone Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 How do actually train the birds...sorry I have not got a clue.... Cheers
OLDYELLOW Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 The question is what gives you the pleasure of having pigeons? i have had fancy pigeons when i was a kid they were nice to look at and watch fly. This didnt give me a big adrenaline rush so became board. then i eventualy had my own home i was in same possition wondering whether i wanted rollers and tumblers or racing pigeons. After 6 weeks of been at the house 6 racing pigeons turned up so i got a old chest of drawers and made a trap reported them kept them in a shed and the fancier said i could keep them so then i bought a new loft ectra. In reply to training them once your ybs are ranging for around 2 hours they are ready to train usualy no more than 4 weeks before 1st race. You then basket them and let go down the line of flight in 5 mile incriments for example :2 x 5 mile 2 x 10 mile 2 x 15 mile 3 x 20 mile 3 x 30 mile. Then these birds should be ready to race in your club.
Longstone Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 I just love letting the out and sitting watching them at my window as I have said I had 12 but its only been a few days and miss them like mad. Its iv lost my kids, I looked after them and was down at at at least twice aday. I like the sound of racing pigeons but really not fussed as long as I get some birds.
