ZK Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Hi guys, I am a total newbie, I am looking into having my own stock in the future, once i have learned. I am considering starting off with afew birds - what are the most basic things i need to do before getting started? Thanks, Zeeshan
Guest cloudview Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 get your self a decent loft , garden shed or the like , make sure its bone dry and well ventilated
ZK Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 cool, Do i need to consider any extra needs for the winter? i.e. temperature inside shed/ loft? what is the best way to maintain the ideal temperature? ideal living conditions for the pigeons?
Peckedhen Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 You don't need to worry about the temperature, just make sure that your loft is dry and draft free. Welcome to the forum.
ZK Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 Thanks What is a reasonable number of pigeons to start off with? is it best to get them young? where can i get good feed at good prices? anyone know where i can get some good young pigeons from?
Guest shadow Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 the best thing to do is read as many books on the subject before you start you need to know the basics before you get any birds
ZK Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 Cool, Indeed, I shall do some reading - not looking to get the birds at he very moment - just wondering
ZK Posted July 20, 2008 Author Report Posted July 20, 2008 Hi guys and girls, have found the following site in search of books: http://www.murrayandmills.co.uk/catalog/erol.html
Peckedhen Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 If you join the RPRA they send you a booklet on pigeon keeping. I also have Pigeons by Matthew Vriends which I've found helpful. These are just the basics of pigeon keeping but OK for a start. I made my first loft from a 6'x4' B&Q shed....it didn't last long before I needed a larger one! There are often lofts for sale on eBay if you can find one local to you.
ZK Posted July 20, 2008 Author Report Posted July 20, 2008 Will check it out, need all the info and help i can get, thanks. Have been searching on ebay - not found a suitable one at the moment, let me know if anyone does come across lofts/ sheds for sale.
