Guest Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 A few of you have asked me to post photographs of our pond. Steve has now put a section on our webpage http://www.redroselofts.com/koi-pond.htm
Peckedhen Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 WOW!! Some project Hyacinth! Do you not have problems with Herons?
westy Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 my dad has got a pond but not as big as that.
Guest Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 No problems with Herons or coons, the sides are sheer, a heron or coon has to bend over to catch a fish and they can't do that with the sheer sides.
snowy Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 that just must be the best place to live! out in the open like that! bet the pigeons are well happy! & the koi pond is just WOW! WELL DONE
Guest Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Well Done, Linda and Steve . the pond is brilliant, and how many fishes do you have now at the moment ?
Guest Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 It's a great to live here, it's what they call The High Desert Plateau, with very little humidity, therefore we have very little sickness with the birds. The loft never gets damp and it is not unusual to use a sweeping brush to clean out in summer instead of a scraper. On race day, if the birds come on line, we can see then from about 5 miles out. We have an abundance of wildlife, our friendly deer, many varaties of wild birds and families of quail, grund squirrels and ground chucks. As for the fish Craig, we have about 28 in the Pond and another smaller ones in the quarantine tank in the breeding loft. It doesn't cost any more to travel to Oregon that the Costa Packet does these days and we always love havng visitors at Red Rose Lofts.
MsPigeon Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Extrodinary! Linda, I love it. Looks like you and Steve have been dabbling in pond building for a while. Where does the water come from? Is it the same water recycling? If so how often do you need to add water?
Guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 sorry for my late reply Carol, The pond is Steve's pride and joy, but is it considerably smaller that the one we built in Washington, that was 40,000 gallons this is about 20,000. I can't explain how the situation works, but the water is continually re-cycled through underground pipes and comes back into the pond through a bio filter, this water falls into a creek and then back into the pond. The bio filter is outside my office window, and the noise from the waterfall down into the creek keeps me quite sane.
MsPigeon Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Cool, yes I understand it's filtered and recycled. So is the creek you speak of your little man made creek or a natural creek? I would love to build something similar but the creeks running through my property are not year round. But if the same water is recycled and just in need of a freshening now and then, I got it made!
Guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Man made Carol. If you need nay help with building a pond, just give us a call or e-mail Steve, he's ull of very imaginative inexpensive ideas. Cheers
Guest Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Linda, Is there any more new fishs in your new pond ?
Guest Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Not at the moment Craig, the fish are dormant for the winter and hugging the bottom of the pond, we will be adding new stock once the weather gets warmer
Guest Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Linda. how do you know if there is a boy or girl fish is it hard to find the sexuals ?
jimmy white Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 exellent ,,,, linda sounds a beautifull place
Guest Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 forget all the pictures of the pond he's dug most of it up again including MY bridge. Our plan is now to enclose the top end of the pond into a sun room connected to our patio so we can sit out in the winter months and still watch the fish and enjoy the winter sunshine To be honest my back yard is like the Black Hole of Calcutta at the moment Jimmy, see the window, at the back of the waterfall, that's my Office
THE FIFER Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 lot of hard work into ur project but will be worth it in the end, lovely looking place, all the best.
Guest CS Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 GOOD PHOTOS, LINDA... Do you and Steve buy new fishes every year?
