THE FIFER Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Weather forecast for the UK Close the UK boxMap PresenterMonthly OutlookUK SummaryPublished at 11:00, 26 SeptemberNext update at 11:00, 3 OctoberSummaryIsn't it autumn?Summer looks as though it may have not quite given up on us yet.Signs are that high pressure may never be too far away through much of at least the first half of October, meaning many of us may well see some pleasantly warm days in the next few weeks.Monday 26 September 2011 to Sunday 2 October 2011Warming up nicelyAfter a questionable start, the last week of September will end with a subtle nod towards what so many of us seem to have missed this year.Rain and wind will still trouble the north of Scotland until the middle of the week, while the south coast of England could be plagued by variable amounts of cloud and misty conditions at first. Despite this though, temperatures will begin a slow but steady rise as a ridge of high pressure builds and warm winds blow in from the continent.By the middle of the week the feed of dry, warm air should mean that temperatures will be hitting the mid 20s for most across England, Wales and southern Scotland and for many, clouds may become but a distant memory.By the end of the week we may even see temperatures reaching 27C in parts of the southeast - very warm compared with the seasonal average of around 17C for this time of year here.Wet and windy weather will, however continue to trouble extreme western fringes of Scotland and Northern Ireland through much of the week.Monday 3 October 2011 to Sunday 9 October 2011Cooler but still sunnyA subtle shifting of the high pressure centre towards the southwest will start to swing the wind to more of a northerly or northwesterly, bringing slightly cooler conditions across the UK. There should, however still be plenty of warm sunshine so, in general, temperatures remaining above average for the time of year. The northerly wind may well drag in a few showers over western and northern Scotland but most areas should be predominantly dry.Monday 10 October 2011 to Sunday 23 October 2011More of the sameSignals look good for a continued spell of settled weather into October as high pressure looks set to remain largely in force. It is unlikely to be totally dry through this period - it is October, after all - the most likely place for any wet weather being the north. As we head through October the nights will get longer; consequently we'll see both lower daytime maxima and lower night time minima. Early signs are though that there should still be plenty of sunny and warm days yet to come.Next weekDid some one say 'Indian summer?Monthly forecastingThe weather beyond about a week ahead stretches even the most experienced weather forecaster. Complex numerical weather forecast models from the Met Office and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) are run many times for the month (and season) ahead to build up a picture of the likelihood of different weather types affecting the UK.
