Guest Ruth Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Hi all. I'm after some advice, we have found a racing pigeon. It has 2 rings on, one on each leg, it looks like one is yellow, maybe oramge and the other one is red. It has been at my partners house since saturday afternoon. We have not got a clue what to do with it, it just sits on the house roof or the neighbours house roof. We feed the wild birds on seed on the lawn so it has been down eating that. But we haven't got a clue what we should do with it. Should we try and catch it? and if so how do we do it? Will it just fly away on it's own eventually? I won't be able to attempt to catch it until i'm at my partners house at the weekend, will it survive out in the elements? All help and advice would be great. ThanksRuth
Leroy Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Hi Ruth, thanks for taking the time to help this stray racer. The bird will be fine in the wild until it has recovered from it's race, and has probably got lost. If you are able to catch it by leading it into a shed or garage with seed, then reading the unique ring number we can tell you who the owner is or sort out someone local to help you out. Lee
OLDYELLOW Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Thanks for trying to help this bird , firstly if you can start to feed the bird in a certain spot on the garden and place a cardboard box above the food dish and support it with a stick on a bit of string then simply when birds eating under the box pull the string , bird caught then keep it in the box , then if you give us the birds ring number we will try to help you locate it's owner , it may also have a phone number on it's wing feathers
Guest david gingell Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 hello.are you any where near newport in south wales.if you are i can trap the bird for you and take it to my loft untill the owner is found.hope this helps.
Guest Ruth Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 Thanks for your advice, well my partner has phoned me tonight and our pigeon friend has been down onto the lawn for his tea tonight, and has now gone back up to the roof again, my partner won't attempt to catch him so i will give it a try. Do you think he would come to me if i put some seed in my hand? Or will we need a cunning plan to catch him? How easy will he be to catch? and what do you advise us to put him into once we have caught him? I really do worry that the local wildlife will get him, so i'm hoping he stays up on the roof. By the way we are in Staffordshire.
