Fatal Peregrine Attack, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone

Hi

After getting my birds broke to my new house over the last few weeks, i was looking forward to the racing season. On Sunday 3rd April i let the hens out only to suffer a Peregrine attack, which one of my best racing hens was killed in a nearby neighbour's garden and another 3 hens are presumed dead, as they haven't been seen since.

I'm a small team man and i only had 15 to start the old bird racing season and now i only have 11. I don't feel like racing old birds at all, they way i feel now. I'm absolutely gutted, one of the hens missing flew both the Talbenny and Penzance young bird nationals last year. The young hen that was killed in my neighbours garden was my 3rd bird of the Talbenny young bird national and i had high hopes for her. I'm afraid to let my young birds out in case they go into them. I'm just totally sickened.

The country is full of Peregrine's, hawk etc, if this great sport of ours is to survive, something needs done sooner, rather than later.

No all to well how you are feeling i have had years of the same, when the Scottish Homing Union were conducting there falcon and hawk survey one of the fact finding issues were ,how many falcon nest sites do you no of and where are they ,I purchased an ordinance survey map and pinpointed every nest site known to me so as to help fellow fanciers when training as not to liberate in the vicinity, nothing was ever published and when i queried this i was told that the RSPB had informed them this would not be allowed which i think is utter crap :emoticon-0179-headbang:

We should post locations of sites on these sort of pages and at least give the fellow fanciers that are training there birds a fighting chance i honestly think the time for Mr nicey nicey soft touch pigeon fancier has to end ,Keep your chin up don't let the b---- get you down an eye for an eye .

I agree, something needs to be done. The RSPB have too much control on what get published, especially the facts and true figures of how many there are of each raptor in the uk. There have been more now than there ever has been.

I know off 2 other men in my area, only a few miles away, have had birds killed by peregrine's and hawks in the last few weeks.

There has to be easier way of getting there numbers cut down.

Was talking to someone who is in the no regarding raptors and remember him saying at the time when they had that dead bird scare in scotland referring to bird flu i think ,and he stated they had put steps into place to vacinate peregrines as they could be in serious danger if it got into there colony ,perhaps all our fundraising Blackpool etc should be put into paying some intelligent twisted person who could develop something for us should be plenty of them about .

I can't agree with you more on this one. It's common sense that if a location is a known peregrine hotspot, then you don't train your pigeons on that line. I took my birds to Dunbar last year - 3 separate libs of max of 3 birds a time - and first 2 got hit with one bird missing, presumed killed. I learned later that one trainer (Bo'ness) had stopped going to Dunbar because of the number of hits there / from there. So if that's a known hotspot, we all want to know about it.

I also recall 2 years ago asking Angela (on the forum) about training from Galashiels and Stow and was told of 1 pair in town centre and 2 pairs in quarries north of Stow. So these are also no-go areas for me for training.

I don't see anything wrong in publicising this type of information when its sole purpose is to stop us unknowingly liberating our pigeons in a peregrine hotspot. We have a duty of care towards our pigeons and there is nothing RSPB or anyone else can do to prevent that information being published. I don't keep pigeons to feed hawks.
