I think a more common cause for this is fighting in the nest boxes. This could be a rogue cock(s) going into other box(es), or hen(s) not properly settled to their own box going into other box(es). Keep your eyes and ears open for signs of a commotion in the loft, and you'll find out who are the offending birds.
