Please Help Darkness

hi guys

 

i need help i have no clue how darkness system works im just starting up and hoping to race the 2011 young bird season if i can get enough young birds i want to put my yb's on the darkness system i have made some wooden boards to go over my windows but how dark does the loft need to be as it's not pitch black inside but it is quite dark and if any body can please explain to me how to do the darkness system i will be really greatful via pm or on here thank you for any help you can give me
