yeboah Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Just been away taking the dog a walk ,went down to Wamphray where i was born all those years ago,Wamphray has not changed much in all those years still got the same woods and hedgerows that have been there for generations ,I walked for two and a half hours through the country lanes and woods also up the waters edge only met one person out walking there dog as i was walking through the woods it had an eerie silence also the country lanes for in all of the two and a half hours i did not see one small bird only a few crows in a field how the rspb can state the bird numbers are dropping because of change in farming methods beggars beyond belief ,when i grew up in the country we were greeted by the dawn chorus of so many small birds and it was really sad today that they have all been wiped out by raptors that are at saturation levels.

Guest spin cycle Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 the countryside round here is full of 'secondhomers' trying to turn it into suburbia
Guest IB Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Don't see as many small birds around here as I did when we first moved in around 16 years ago - even the common species like sparrows - but single birds do visit the back garden to collect the pigeons' down feathers to line their nests, and they land in squadrons on the ornamental grass plants in the front garden, seem really fond of these seeds. But then the countryside around here is disappearing fast. Can't believe the numbers of houses that are going up. Wonder if that has a bearing on dwindling numbers too as it was grassland that they were built on?
