Guest strapper Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 wood shavings etc is usually called deep litter, many top fanciers use this way of floor covering.
ozbrit Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 i put down stalosan f and shavings for my youngbirds, the stalosan is a powdered biocide which kills bacteria, cocci, worms etc. good stuff never had any problems whilst using it
DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 put sand Aye kiln dried sand :-/ I am trying for the first time loft granuals, £7 a bag it is a form of deep litter similar to cat litter but for pigeons, I was in Rembrants lofts and it really seemed to be working well, just rake the worst of the top, Chickadee is tired of scaping out every day I first tried saw dust from the workshop but it was too fine, scattered too easy when the birds flapped their wings Do not use hard wood shavings, use soft wood shavings as heavy as possible or there is a product called easybed that a lot of fanciers use

Guest Freebird Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 What depth of sand? I used shavings in the past but it tended to get blown into corners. Have read some fanciers prefer to leave stools to build up and recon in a dry, well vented loft this is a good method as the powdered stools dry the fresh stuff so what are your recomendations/drawbacks on this. Like the idea of sand though.
mitch Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 keep doing what you are doing mate, less chance of disease

Like the idea of sand though. One loft I was in had only a half inch deep kiln dried sand, cheap from jewson's white mono block sand, also quite sterile due to heat process
mitch Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 if you have the time mate keep scraping, brush in a little harkers loft powder wich will disenfect and keep the loft smelling fresh
Guest karl adams Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 kiln dried sand mixed with lime is good as the droppings dry up fast
Guest chrisss Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 birchwood chips [the heavy ones]i used to think deep litter was a lazy way of doing things, then after seeing geoff kirklands setup i thought i would give it a try,and have not looked back, the birds have never looked so good, but each to their own

Guest chrisss Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 at least 6 inches, all i do is take the lumps off from under the perches, but the loft[as always] must be bone dry,i have never seen my birds so good,no worm eggs/cocci can touch them, because there are no damp patches to live on/in,the perches are done every day and brushed with loft white, and so far the only sick birds i have seen are strays,[and i know i should not have said that!!!!]

stevebelbin Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 Since packing in racing the birds ive been a little lazy with a small number of birds that ive kept. I have them on deep litter, using hemp straw and heavy wood chippings mixed together. Mixed into this is Stalostan F and the birds seem to be keeping in fine fettle, as good if not better than when i was racing etc. I must point out though the birds free to go in and out of the loft at will and only roost in the section at night, which does contribute to their health I think.
jimmy white Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 Keep doing what your doing bud, spray floor with virkon s,dont think you will go far wrong mate. Les best way, twice a day if poss, during racing [takes a few mins ] birds get well used to you, spray virkon s ,,,all over on good dry days
