Pigeon Snoring?

Recommended Posts

Hello there

I dont know if anybody remembers me - I use to come on here a while ago as I was looking after my late grandads pigeons. I then had a baby and have not been on here since as my baby has sleep problems and I usually only get a couple of hours a night.

I only have Blackie left now and I am still looking after him. When I covered him up this evening it sounded like he was snoring. Is it possible for a pigeon to snore or should I be worried - does he have respitatory problems?

Any help would be gratefully received. AM off to bed now as my lil bubba will probably be up in an hour or so lol!!!!

Hope everybody is well and happy here. I recognised Old Yellow but have not really had time to look around this super super new site.

Love Nikki, baby Traivys and a snoring Blackie xx

welcome back global girl it sounds as if you have respirity problems , as you expected but you only have the one bird in loft , when you say covering him up what do you mean ???

ahh thanks guys will try the garlic and see if that works. When I say cover him up at night I put a cover over the wire mesh as it is really cold at night plus there are alot of cats around here that jump up at the mesh in the night so I cover him up and then uncover him in the morning.

If the garlic doesn't work what can i do, is it serious and do I need to be worried, I'll be gutted if I lose this one as its the last of my grandads pigeons :-(

Do I just put some cloves of garlic in the water? xxxx

normaly snoring is caused by something vibrating in the mouth , i suppose the first step is to find the cause , at this time of year the moult in the most important factor , it's important that the bird is fed properly with plenty of grit and minerals ( pickstones ) and a good protein feed with added linseed and some vitamins . During the moult which is a stressful time for the birds , birds can get a touch of canker , so first step would be to open the birds beak and look inside one look for any cheesy growth or candida white growth if neither is present look for anything which may be causing an obstruction it may of eaten something it shouldnt of done . The last factor will be is the loft ventilated enough if not then respirity could be a problem , this could be caused by you covering up at night , these are the factors i can get from what you've said , trying putting a bath in for your bird with warm water and a few drops of olbas oil and a bit of crushed garlic . It also could be down to the age of the bird , all the best Mark :)

Thanks Mark, I'm kind of reluctant to not cover him up as my grandad always did and he is very old, over 20 years old and I think the stress of the cats and the cold will be too much for him at his age but on Friday I'm gonna give the loft a proper scrub out and try the oil and cider vinegar and he's gonna have a nice bath on Friday. I unfortunately do not have the time to do it before Friday as I have my little one but he will be at his dads on Friday so Friday is Blackie pamper day. I dont think he'll let me look in his mouth, out of all of my grandads bird he is the most nervy and goes absolutely nuts when I go near him if he lets me pick him up without a fuss I KNOW he's ill but again I just dont want to cause him any unnecessary stress :D

canker isn't just found in the mouth, throat or oesophagus, it is also found in the sinus and other bodily organs so you wouldn't see anything just opening the beak in these cases. save yourself time, and money in the long run and get them tested. The natural products suggested however if you have a case of canker or respiratory in my opinion wouldn't have an affect, these are preventative measures.

I know this may sound a bit divvy but do I take him to a vet to get him tested or do you have to go to a bird specialist and if so where do I find one? I never had any of the others get ill. Thanks for all your help guys xxxxx

pity we couldn't find a pigeon fancier near you that you could go to....i suppose you could ring some vets first and ask them if they did birds ?
