Hi there!

I'm new to this message board...and moderately new to the whole pigeon world so please forgive me for my lack of basic knowledge...

Im a Glasgow Artist looking to set up what would essentially be a Pigeon Aviary (something that looks like a fairly classical Victorian aviary), but housing the Common Feral Pigeon (Columba Livia).

When setting up an aviary, or infact loft, what would the a)legal and b)recommended requirements relating to size, shelter, accesability to water and lighting?

Is there any legislation surrounding the care of these birds that must be adhered to? (Obviously I want to stay within the Law and have the birds best interests in mind!!).

I hope to hear back from you!

Hi Phoebe,

As long as the loft or avairy is at least 15 feet from any human dwelling and does not exceed 7 feet in height you should be ok. check with your local council because i maybe wrong.

Pigeons require alot of care, they must be kept clean and good dry conditions to live Phoebe, the grain should be kept stored in a secure air tight area, not in your home, the best thing to do is to get in touch with all relevant authorities and read alot first then see some guys who can advise you.

hope this helps..

When you're saying 15 feel from any human dwelling and no more than 7 feet in height you are being very specific - what sources are you looking at? I have found a number of great sources written by breeders, but im currently in search of the specific legislation surrounding this issue. I am based up in scotland, but it would be for a piece of work down in Cambridgeshire.

Thanks

P

Your local Council Website under planning should give you details. But it varies greatly depending on whether it is a house, flat maisonette etc.

The best idea is to contact the Planning Officer at you local Council.

We have just been reported for putting up a loft in out Garden but as ours is a 3 level Terraced house as opposed to Flats Masonettes that neighbour us we were OK.

It still had to be 5metres fron the Dwelling, below 3 metres in height from ground level and not taking up more than 30% of Garden ground!

Hope this helps!

5metres fron the Dwelling, below 3 metres in height from ground level and not taking up more than 30% of Garden ground! is right but it can be within 5 metres as long as the out buildings dont exceed 50 cubic metres, the reason 5 metres away is if it exceeds 50 cubic metres it is classed as an extension of the property and you need planning permission.  :)
