Where do the lost birds end up?

Every day on this site I read of birds being lost from races, training tosses and wonder where they all end up? I know some will have been taken by BOP but what happens to the rest.

You see more and more pigeons in our town centres with leg rings and sometimes race rubbers as well, are all the lost birds ending up in town centres? If so then why do we not have representatives from each area to go and catch these town birds and return them to their owners?

That way, people will get their birds back; it will also improve public relations when they see the sport cleaning up the town centres of these unwanted birds.

What are your thoughts?

To be honest, if my birds were found after a few weeks of hanging around with feral pigeons I wouldn't want them back.

a ) if they did it once then I wouldn't trust them not to just fly off again

b ) they'll have all sorts of horrible diseases

c ) lost birds are natures way of separating the wheat from the chaff: if a bird doesn't make it home then it's not a good enough bird... it's micro-evolution!
