micko and jack Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 i took a header last week and made some floor grills for the loft after slipping on the stairs and ending up in bed for 4 weeks im going to make a hopper feeder as well just in case im laid up again hope you like the photos here's the grills I made 6x2 tantalised (treated) rough ripped at 5/8 with 3/4 dowels they are pinned then glued and pinned 1/2 slips on the ends 2x1 screwed around the walls of the loft 5" to the top the runners down the length of the loft are 2x1 supported on 2x1 5" high with 3"under it the 3" glued and pinned to the 5" then the 2x1 glued and pinned to the 5" supported underneath by the 3" kitchen blocks screwed to the end walls to hold the 2x1 joists in position the supports are every 16" the small loft I haven't finished yet have been wrecked this 2 days but I cut them 3/4 to try and get finished sooner even with the 1" spacing on both sets more crap sticks to the 3/4 grills so I would stick with the 5/8 ripped them with a fine tooth saw blade I finish on the sides wasn't to bad so I only had to run the belt sander on the tops im happy with them and the birds don't seem to mind and there's a tip for anyone in the small loft ours is only 5x3x3 the top half of a tool paint tin store you name it we use it for young birds to bring them on a bit after leaving the nest but under the grills I'm using an 8x4 election poster on the floor and turned up the walls 6" resting on 2x1 batons 16" apart so no actual wooden floor under it saving the price of a sheet of ply
