Stray Pigeons In Norway, Ihu 09 S

I have sent some emails about this to IHU representatives already, but no replies so far. Now I found this forum interesting and hope somebody will give some more information about the case as we have no experience with pigeons and are quite suprised about what have happened to us.

Two days ago (Thursday afternoon, July 1st):

We had an exiting experience this afternoon. A pigeon came walking into our kitchen (through the living room) while we were preparing for

dinner. It stayed on our balcony and did not stop coming inside. Our kids (1 year and 3 years) were of course very exited about this. We

found some bread to feed it from the kids hands. It was clearly hungry. We noticed it had rings on both feet, but did not think too

much about it until we thought about calling someone we knew did have something to do with pigeons.

This person came to visit and it was just before the pigeon was about to fly away (had been staying for 2-3 hours). He managed to bring it

back by throwing some food to it and he knew how to handle it so he could hold the pigeon. We could then inspect the rings and found the

following:

IHU

09

S

96426

This guy, Andor Driveklepp, brought the pigeon with him and would do some investigations.

The other ring was green and seemed to be a microchip for something.

Village: Brattvåg (West Norway, between the cities Ålesund and Molde)

UTM coordinates:

N 69 44962

E 036 8476

This evening (Saturday, July 3rd):

Another pigeon came to visit this evening July 3rd. We tried to call our local "expertise", but he did not answer. The pigeon got some bread and water and after a couple of hours it left. This pigeon was less tame than the other one.

We managed to read the number off its ring though:

IHU

09

S

79525

Does anyone have any idea about where these pigeons were liberated and what their destination is? We also wonder if these pigeons will find their way home even if they stop for food looking for someone to feed them?

Best regards,

Today I called the chairman of Balbriggan. I was informed that the 79525 numbered pigeon must have been released in France Saturday morning 7:30 (July 3rd). This makes our experience even more unbelievable to us. What is the chance of two pigeons from different releases to arrive to the same house with two days in between!?? A flight distance calculator shows that it is about 1500 km from where we live to Paris. #79525 arrived around 8 pm (local time) Saturday evening.

I haven't called Enniscorthy Secretary yet so I don't know where the #96426 came from. I will try to make a call tomorrow.

#79525 has stayed on our roof for the most of the day today as well, but left a couple of hours ago. Wonder if it will be here tomorrow again, but this evening it has started to rain some. It might want to find better shelter?

Would like to have comments to our experience. We have hard time believing both these pigeons came to us by coincidence. Anyone out there that may be able to "explain"? Our house is in the middle of a community with around 100 houses.

This is what I finally found out about these pigeons:

IHU 09 S 96426:

-------------------

Pigeon was released in Cookstown, NORTHERN IRELAND Aug 16th 2009 and owner didn't see it since. (It came to Synnaland, Brattvåg, NORWAY July 1st 2010 (around 16:30).

It came walking into our kitchen without prior notice and appeared to be very tame.)

The owner was really suprised to hear the pigeon had ended up in Norway after such a long time:-)

IHU 09 S 79525:

-------------------

Pigeon was released in Bude, Cornwall, ENGLAND June 12th 2010. (It came to Synnaland, Brattvåg, NORWAY July 3rd 2010 (around 20:00).)

This pigeon has parents raising very good pigeons for the owner. The owner believed the pigeon must have stayed on a ship for a few days before ending up in Norway. He thought it was very unusual that it would end up here. He appreciated very much that I reported this pigeon to him:-)
