I raise rollers for competetion. Since rollers came from tumblers I need to know the difference. Tumblers fly lower as stated, They also have more types of performances in their tumble. They can twizzle; which is a helicopter motion, roll, plate;a gyro motion, with the wings spread out.deep tail rides, roll wingtip to wingtip in a cartwheel motion, and tumble;which looks like a wet dishrag falling from a second story window. A good kit of tumblers would be exciting to watch I would think. The feed requirements would probably be similar to rollers.

Rollers on the other hand turn over backwards with inestimable speed for considerable distances. At least thats what the standard says.

There are several different breeds of tumblers while there is only one true roller. The Birmingham Roller originated right there in merry old England in the Black country.Rumor has it was in the late 1700`s. The iron workers would call each other out and the winner would get the others birds. They flew small 6-8 bird kits where we fly twenty these days and the standard has been changed to include kitting and quality of the roll in addition to depth. Simultaneous performance with moderate depth is the key to winning in competetion these days versus depth in the beginning.

The Birmingham Roller was first  brought over to the US in the late 1800`s via Canada and developed into the North American Roller which is a larger muscular bird known to fly higher and have deeper rolls. Oriental rollers are a lot like tipplers that roll. They will fly for hours at 700-800 feet performing 100 foot or better rolls. Problem is the are not very frequent and you have to have binaoculars to watch them.

William Hyla Pensom brought over the Birmingham Roller in the 1930`s and the breed has remained pretty true to what Pensom brought over. He formed the first Birmingham Roller club here and really was the driving force in getting the BR started in the US. Now there are 2500 members in the NBRC.

This is my account as I know it to be. It might not all be perfectly factual but it is close.
