Guest beautyhomer Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 Samantha, If you want birds like the black fantail in the photo, then you do want INDIAN FANTAILS!!!!!!!!.The second photo would appear to be a crossbred. If your fantails have muffs and a slight crest then they are indeed INDIANS. Regards Andrew
samantha Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 no its definately just normal fantails i want, ( the indian ones are a bit posh even for me!!) but thanks for the info andrew
Peckedhen Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Samantha, the second pigeon looks exactly like my garden fantails, except they are pure white. If they breed ( I'm begining to wonder if I have two hens:) you can have some with pleasure.
THE FIFER Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 SAMANTHA THE BLACK FANTAIL IS AN INDIAN

Guest beautyhomer Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 Samantha, As far as I am aware you can only get garden fantails in white, unless anyone knows different. Can you put a photo of your fantails on please? Andrew
THE FIFER Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 you can get garden fantails in any colour,
Guest beautyhomer Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 Sorry fifer but I was right about the colours available in Garden Fantails.I have contacted the NPA secretary and she has confirmed that the standard only permits them in white. Andrew
snowy Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 samantha, i could ask someone local to me, if your interested in having one or two in your loft,? he might be able to drop them up to you too, as he drives a delivery van???
samantha Posted December 7, 2005 Author Report Posted December 7, 2005 Sorry fifer but I was right about the colours available in Garden Fantails.I have contacted the NPA secretary and she has confirmed that the standard only permits them in white. Andrew so are you saying the colours are only achieved by cross breeding ??
Guest beautyhomer Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Samantha, There are three breeds of fantail commonly seen,INDIAN,EXHIBITION and GARDEN.Until recently there wasn't a standard for garden fantails i.e. they were not a recognised breed.A standard has now been written for them but only in white. The coloured fantails are EXHIBITION which are available in a variety of colours and markings. What you have seen are probably poor quality/crossbred exhibitions. If you have white Garden Fantails there is no point crossing them with these coloured fantails as you will not be able to show them. If you really want coloured fantails it might be best starting again with some quality birds. For ease of management I would sugest you get Indians until you get more experience with pigeons. Perhaps glassfeather could post some pictures of the different fantails so you can see whats available Andrew
Guest Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 beautyhomer, If i pair brown fantail cock x black pied hen, what youngster colour will be ?
Glassfeather Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 There are some good photos of exhibition fantails at the fantail club site: http://www.angelfire.com/dc/fantail/2004/photos.html Indian fantails here: http://www.zyworld.com/kevin~keeler/Indians.htm
Guest beautyhomer Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Thankyou Graeme, Knew you would know where to find some good pictures. Speight, Any chance of a photo of the brown, would like to make sure it is a brown and not an ash red before listing the breeding possibilities. Andrew
Guest beautyhomer Posted December 10, 2005 Report Posted December 10, 2005 Without knowing the parents of these two birds it is not possible to give a very accurate prediction. You do not say what pattern the brown cock is i.e barless, barred or cheq.As the hen carries spread she will pass this on to both young cocks and hens.If she has 2 spread genes all her young will be spread,if only 1 then 50% of her young will be spread. As colour is sex linked, all the young hens will be brown and all the cocks will be of the blue series Therefore if the hen as only one spread gene we can safely predict the following HENS Brown Brown Spread Brown Pied Brown Spread Pied COCKS Blue Black Blue Pied Black Pied If you get any brown cocks then the original cock is an Ash Red and not a brown at all. This is because Ash Red is the most dominant, then blue and finally brown.
Peckedhen Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 They are beautiful Samantha. How do you know they are cocks? I'm still not sure what my two are? Are there any racing pigeons with these neat faces? My Logans have typical racing pigeon beaks with quite large ceres. :-/
samantha Posted December 12, 2005 Author Report Posted December 12, 2005 the only reason i know they are cocks is because the bloke i got then off told me otherwise i wouldnt have a clue ;D :
Peckedhen Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 ;DLOL and here's me thinking you'd be able to help me sex mine!!
