Pigeon With Green Ring - Wickford, Essex.

A dark grey pigeon with white marking on its beak, speckled feathers and a GREEN leg ring keeps returning to the roofs in our road in Wickford, Essex. It first appeared on Saturday evening (5th June 2010) at about 8pm, and stayed in the same position throughout the night, during the storms. By the morning it had gone. However, it returned again to the same roofs at the same time on Sunday night, disappeared by Monday morning and returned again at around 8pm on Monday night.

 

It doesn't appear to be injured as it is flying around, but stays put on the roofs at night. It's therefore virtually impossible for anyone to get near it, let alone capture it in order to read the information on the leg ring!

 

If anyone has lost a pigeon that matches this description, please reply. We are concerned it's lost, won't be able to eat/drink or may be attacked by a predator. We put some food and water out, but it hasn't been over to our house or garden - Maybe because we have got a cat!

hi mate  yes it will have seen your cat  if it has a green ring on it  it could be a 99  bird  making it 11 years old or  i think a o3 bird cant remember all the colors  of the rings  if you have some  peas the type  you make soup with  hard ones they bird will eat them   you  have a chance to catch it in the dark  but don't try anything stupid    thanks for your  concern but should you get its  full ring number post it on here   it will start of with the   letters  either GB Shu or Whu or then the year 99  then a letter  say t  then a number 1235 or more

there not much you can do to help the bird until its caught and ring number read out , but if fed it should clear it's clearing off and returning says its trying to find home but when cant find the right path returning to it's last known area rice / dried peas could be used to feed it or buy a small quantity of pigeon food and place somewhere safe with a dish of water , thanks for your concerns for this losted bird

Many thanks for replying and for the advice. The pigeon was back again at 8pm last night, although it's disappeared again now! There really isn't any way of catching it unfortunately. It's several gardens/houses away and where it sits is very difficult to get to! Sorry for the vague description also- We tried to look at it better through binoculars. We are not pigeon fanciers, just animal lovers!

We bought some dried peas and rice as you suggested, but it hasn't been anywhere near us sadly.

What should we do if the poor thing keeps returning to this area and how much longer would be a cause for concern? Are there any rescue groups you are aware of that could help? We would be sad if anything was to happen to it and not do anything to at least try and help it. Thanks again.

Thanks again for all your replies...Good news we hope - The pigeon didn't come back tonight, so hopefully it has finally managed to find its way back to where it should be!
