Guest Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Came a cropper twice this year with manufacturers mixing their weights & measures. :B (1) Duramitex: sold in 'ml' bottles, label talks about ml then changes to gallons. Ended up mixing 1 bottle into 2 litres of water and just about melted the wicker in the baskets... and yes, been to Specsavers!!! ;D (2) Hormoform: sold in kg bags, but dished out in ounces per bird!!!! I can handle ounces, gallons, ml, litres ok, using a dual measuring jug. But I usually use a tablespoon to dish the solid stuff out. Anybody tell me how much a level teaspoon and a heaped tablespoon holds, in both grammes and ounces please?
Peckedhen Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I think that depends upon what you are weighing Bruno. A teaspoon of flour would weigh less than a teaspoon of sugar.
Guest Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I have a set of scales in the loft and just use that to measure mine out.
Guest Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Spot on, Peckedhen. Honestly hadn't spotted that. Makes me wonder about previous advice given when making up 'own' mix, that using one 'measure', one off grains a, b & c would always be the same.. obvious now that it is not. :-/ Looks like scales like Sbelbin says.
carl Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 I have a set of scales at the loft to weight my food out.
carl Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 30 years ago we just added "drugs" to the water till the color looked "right". What do you mean don, that cant be good
Guest Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Agree Don, medication for animals is based on body weight. I think I am not alone in not weighing my birds ... but then, I don't medicate them.
Guest Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Mystery of weights, measures and spoons solved. Wife had a cookery book stashed away - weights, measures and spoons is about the only bleeding thing she's given me out of it!!!!!!!! ;D There is a British Imperial Standard for a level spoonful!!!!! : (Fanfare of trumpets) And Peckedhen spot on: 1 ounce = 3 tablespoons of flour; or 2 tablespoons of rice. ;D Now ... whats the number for 'Who wants to be a millionaire'?
Guest Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Amazin the bovver a bag of hormoform causes. ;D Now this is supposed to be a food additive... something in addition to the birds normal ration? To be fed at 2 ounces per 'resting' bird per day? How much does a pigeon eat per day? Supposedly 10% of bodyweight. How much does a pigeon weigh? Supposedly between 400 & 600 grammes or between 14 & 20 ounces. (Brilliant that cookery book conversion thingy) 10% = 1.4 ounces or 2 ounces 'normal' food per day. (+ 2 ounces hormoform?) Double the birds daily intake? Am I missing something here? Do I reduce the 'normal' daily ration? How much 'mixture' do you feed per pigeon per day? Wish I'd stayed in bed today!!!!! :-/
symbro Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 what are you going to name your new ulser? i almost gone one just reading this thread haha
Guest Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Symbro, think I'll call it 'chronic stupidness'. ;D When the figures don't add up, go over them again, did this morning. :B Er, hormform NOT 2 ounces per 'resting' bird per day. Its to be fed at 2 ounces per 16 ounces of food per day. :'( Big difference, me thinks. school report card: 'must do better'. :
