Guest marvin Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 hi every one having just stared up again just at to ask does anyone stick to the plan, mine was to get the very best birds i can. take my time and just race young birds this year you would think that this woulkd be easy but oh no since finishing the loft i then filled it with alsorts of pigeons and now im waiting for a pigeon to return after trying to break it so i can race oldbirds am i the only one with the patinece of a gnatt or what i must admit whilst typing this i am smiling to myself some things just dont change this is how i started up over 20 years ago
jimmy white Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 hi marvin, had to smile at the patience of a gnat, but im sure youll find most pigeon men like that[even if they dont admit it] i really think if you could manage your original plan you would be better off in the end[ BUT thats easier said than done] best of luck to you marvin, youll get there in the end, and after all it can be fun trying [ or very trying] :) good luck :)
snowy Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 hi, know what you mean, ive just started up after 20 yrs, but never raced, got my first 2 donated pigeons from a local, both have bad wings, so i have homed them & going to breed from them now. also been donated a few birds (stock) from very kind members of this website, so this will be my first year for young birds( to race) brought a second hand loft from the local bargain pages, but now i think i will need another loft to put my stock birds in, but all the help from these kind members you wont go far wrong, but im well happy as long as ive got pigeons good luck. ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 I think it depends on how serious you want to take it Marvin, if I was starting again I would spend as much as possible on a really good loft, then go to the best man in you area and purchase a round of late breds of his best birds and breed of them a couple of rounds of YBs. Last year I started up on my own after being in partnership for a few years and I did what you did and was too kean to race old birds last season so rushed to get my lofts built. And I have just had to spend the last few months altering my lofts. I would be patient and get the lofts right first if I could go back in time!!
Guest marvin Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 i know what your saying sbelbin lofts have to be right but as you will know every ones location differs as to air flow ect this i can only start with a calculated guess and work from there as for the lofts. being a carpenter that was easy made to measure which was handy as my garden at the rear was an odd shape so i used all the space i had my main aim was more space less birds also as a little swanky treat for myself i built my own german style up and overs only the best for my odds and strays you know. at least i have resisted the urge to go down the park with some corn saying that theres a nice looking pied cock down there lol but thankyou once again for your kind advice as you know we never stop learning at this game suppose thats what keeps us going thanks mate
Guest Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 You will have to make me some of those german boxes for my loft, I hate the plastic fronts that I have on my boxes. Have made them with the grills in so the droppings drop onto a tray, I have seen these used and the birds look great on them.
aarden Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 marvin,i am in the same boat as you, just restarting after 10 years.i planned on starting with young birds, but cant resist trying to break a few yearlings in to race a few old bird races
