johnny11 Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 Has anyone used garden sheds as lofts in the past and are they recommended or not
Guest marvin Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 garden sheds are fine but you want one with an apex roof in my opinion and make sure they are a good 10" off the ground. I have used them before to great success, as with any loft just pay good attention to the ventelation which I am sure you are aware of. My preference would be to install a chimney. Due to my surrounding situation I currently am going to be racing to a 20 foot garden shed this year!!
snowy Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 think i will be getting a shed or build a loft for my stock birds this spring too, as i will need the loft to race to, anyone got any pics of shed/loft conversions, ? as would like to get ideas, pecked hen has a good one
Guest Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 Snowy. I like the way of Linda(a member here) and Steve from the Redrose lofts. a good idea for the new starters lofts. http://www.redroselofts.com/starter_loft.htm
Chatrace Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 I had one brought in when I first started, As you can see I added an aveiry/landing board and lovers along the front and vent ridge in the roof. It was a quick fix till I could build one with sections and other bells and whistles :-)
johnny11 Posted January 25, 2006 Author Report Posted January 25, 2006 Marvin Is that the only ventilation you need in you opinion or do you need a gap under the roof
Chatrace Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 Marvin Is that the only ventilation you need in you opinion or do you need a gap under the roof That what the ridge vent is also the windows are able to open fronm the top down. I did add a inter door so I could get in with out the birds flying out over my head.when you do build one make your plans and then double it :-)
Guest marvin Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 hi there johny 11 i have found that with the heat from the birds rising that if you have a 4" vent in the roof this will draw air really well by trade i am a plumber i have in the past used smoke bombs in the loft to check the ventilation and found that by far the best was the afore mentioned bearing in mind that the location of the loft plays a big part this is to say that if your shed had large walls or trees around it you may well need a little more vent but if you have no more than lets say a 6 foot fence you should be alright there are those who will advise a lot more ventilation than what i have suggested you will know your self when you walk in the loft you shouldnt be able to smell the birds i have nearly finished my lofts which consist of 20 foot of sheds not what i wanted but i need to keep things a little low key at the mo with the neighbers and i will be racing to win the fact that my lofts are made from sheds doesnt restrict the birds ability just as long as the air is right and the birds are happy in there home....marvin
johnny11 Posted January 26, 2006 Author Report Posted January 26, 2006 Marvin Do you have any pictures. My situation is the way you described enclosed really so what would you suggest?
Guest marvin Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 i once read a piece by an belgian chap who wrote about a belgian partnership who had won everything then their neighbers erected a lerge fence around the garden and i mean large, saw the photo and it must have been 10 foot or so, they began to get problems with the form of the birds and just werent winning anything so one of the lads installed long chimneys so that they were just above the fence sure enough they got back their winning ways. i will try to get a photo on of my lofts/sheds
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I had never thought of chimneys before but I like it

Guest marvin Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 thanks bewted i bloody hope so those fronts take about an hour each to build i think when i do the stock boxes i might change the design a little i will post pics when done,as you can see not to lofty looking but this is my first year in a new location so im just making sure the neighbers are sweet before i put a pitched and tiled roof on, will be a more than happy when i get the corridor on though
