jimmy white Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 after visiting this exhibition , i think fifer relly needs some gratitude, it was so interesting, with photos of most of the war pigeons ,and what they had acheived, old rp,s dated 1906 photo of winkie the first pigeon to get the dicken medal, also a photo of the dicken medal, and really so much more ,that there was a report in the local paper about it.when i spoke to the curator, he became that interested he was firing questions all ways , he said he never ever thought about pigeons that way, in other words he was amazed, and im quite sure a lot of the public would have been as well.,,,there was lovely mention of the fifers pigeon quote PURDY,,,,,ARCHIE HERD FROM LEVEN WAS THE ONLY FANCIER IN SCOTLAND TO HAVE A BIRD SELECTED FOR THE LIBERATION OF 50 WHITE PIGEONS TO COMMEMORATE THE QUEENS JUBILEE. BIRDS WERE RELEASED FROM STAFFORDSHIRE BY QUEEN ELIZBETH 11 ON 3D OF JULY 2002, WHEN ARCHIES PIGEON CAME HOME, HE WAS ADOPTED BY ST AGATHAS PRIMARY SCHOOL AND NAMED"" PURDEY",one thing that caught my eye was a lovely , amusing poem written by jim douglas, which went like this ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I HAVE A HOMING PIGEON, ITS A LOVELY SHADE OF BLUE BY JINGS IT IS A GOOD ONE THATS WHY I LOVE IT LIKE A DOO IT FEEDS ON WHEAT AND BARLEY AND SOMETIMES LIKES A PEA AHM FOND O MA WEE PIGEON AND MA PIGEONS FOND O ME MA WIFE GOT KINDA JEALOUS O THE BONNY WEE BLUE BURD SHE TOOK THE HUFF FOR AGES AND HARDLY SAID A WORD THEN SAID I CANNA HELP IT NAE MATTER HOW I TRY AHM NO THAT FOND O PIGEONS BUT IM FOND O PIGEON PIE ITS GETTING NEAR DECEMBER AND STILL YIR ON THE DOLE IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS DINNER PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IT AW BOILS DOON TO THIS ITS EITHER IT OR ME A LUMP CAME TAE MA THROAT AND A TEAR SPRANG TAE MY EE AH SAID DINNY BE SILLY MA PIGEONS JUST A BURD AHLL RING ITS NECK FOR XMAS THATS FINE, SHE ALLMOST PURRED OAN XMAS EVE AH GRABBED THE DOO AND GEED ITS NECK A SQUEEZE BUT I LOST MA RESOLUTION WHEN IT BEGAN TO WHEESE AH SAID ,MY POOR WE BURDIE AH CANNY TAKE YER LIFE BUT ONE O YOU HAS GOT TO GO SO ITLL HAVE TO BE THE WIFE NOO MY WIFE HAS NEVER LEFT ME IT SEEMS SHES FLOWN THE NEST ITS MAYBE JUST THE HOLIDAY TAE GIE HER TONGUE A REST IS SHE A ROAMER OR A HOMER AHL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE BUTMA LIFE IS AWFULL PEACEFULL THERES JUST MA BURD AN ME AH SIT UP IN MA DOOCOTE AND LISTEN TAE IT COO AND THE MORE I SEE O PEOPLE THE MORE AH LOVE MA DOO. ;D ;D ;D i think the last day is iith feb, so its worth a visit and its completely free, a great job done by the fifer

jimmy white Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 it was really great, just a wee room but packed with pigeon stuff, the actual original coded messages from the pigeons of war, photographs. clocks. old ringers trophies, and off course the stuffed perigrine, and much more than i could mention, i could have stayed there all day, and a great press coverage in the paper, all good stuff for the public and fancier alike, the photos i took were like me ;D ;D all to pot ;D ;D ,but i might manage some on the post, with speights help ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 The dicken medal,,first bird to achieve this was" winkie" the osmans,,very expensive at the time fifers " purdie" only pigeon in scotland to be selected to be liberated by the queen, in 2002 doc white showing his bald head looking at old ringer doc, white looking at old rp 1906 ybs 2 shillings each {10p] no comment the old salmond trophy [ which i see fifers name on a few years ago]

THE FIFER Posted February 4, 2006 Author Report Posted February 4, 2006 I WILL BE ASKING THE HERITAGE CENTRE WHEN I VISIT NEXT WEEK IF THEY COULD GET IN TOUCH WITH SOME OF THE SCHOOLS AND INVITE THEM ALONG AS IT WOULD BE A GOOD THING FOR THEM TO SEE, AND I WOULD HAVE PURDEY THERE, IT WAS ONE OF THE SCHOOLS WHICH GAVE IT ITS NAME AND HAD IT ALONG WITH OTHERS AT THE OPENING OF THEIR SPORTS DAY.
jimmy white Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 :) brilliant idea, plenty there to interest kids :)good luck fifer
jimmy white Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 ;D ;D ;D THANKS FOR THE COMPLEMENT SNOWY, IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TELL WHO WAS THE OLDEST ,THE RINGER OR ME ;D ;D ;D JUST A MENTION AS THE FIFER SAYS THE PHOTO OF PURDIE WAS THE WRONG PHOTO AS PURDIE WAS INDEED A PURE WHITE [ JUST IN CASE ANYONE PICKED ON THAT ] BUT A REMINDER TO ANY FANCIERS OR NON FANCIERS, ITS CLOSES AFTER SATURDAY WORTH A LOOK :)
THE FIFER Posted February 10, 2006 Author Report Posted February 10, 2006 HI JIMMY THE SCHOOLS WENT OFF FOR 3DAYS HOLIDAY ON WEDNESDAY, WAS AT THE EXHIBITION ON WEDNESDAY AND THEY HAD IT LAID OUT FOR SOME YOUNGSTERS COMING IN TO HAVE A LOOK AND IT WAS SET UP TO SHOW THEM THE VALIANT FILM, SO GOT SOMETHING OUT OF IT FOR THE YOUNGSTERS, I WAS GOING TO GO ALONG AND GET SOME PICS BUT CHANGED MY MIND AS THEY ARE NOT TOO KEEN ON ANYONE TAKING PHOTOS OF KIDS UNLES THEY ARE UR OWN ETC, WHICH IS QUITE CORRECT.
